Since then, the Estonian programmer and Skype co-creator has been shaping the field of AI safety. He helped to found and fund nonprofit organization the Future of Life Institute and the Cambridge Centre for the Study of Existential Risk, while early investments in AI labs Anthropic and DeepMind expanded both his fortune and the scope of his giving.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">Tallinn\u2019s Survival and Flourishing Fund has organized some $150 million to more than 300 projects, including <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/7203729\/ai-evaluations-safety\/\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"undefined\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">METR<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6985850\/jaime-sevilla-epoch-ai\/\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"undefined\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Epoch AI<\/a>, organizations that track AI development and assess the capabilities of different models. He has also backed Mila, an academic institute in Montreal founded by AI pioneer <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/collections\/time100-ai-2025\/7305845\/yoshua-bengio-ai\/\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"undefined\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Yoshua Bengio<\/a>, along with a range of initiatives to cultivate talent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">After an initial focus on supporting technical alignment and governance work, Tallinn is now also funding grassroots organizations that raise awareness of AI\u2019s risks among voters. Despite his conviction in these risks, Tallinn is pragmatic. \u201cIt\u2019s healthier to focus on the world where you can still make a difference,\u201d he says. \u201cIt kind of makes sense.
