In a call made on July 4, a man who said he was a friend of Gleason’s reported that Gleason was not in a good state of mind and had talked about killing himself and Fuentes.According to the review, that call was not handled appropriately or properly, calling it a “glaring failure of basic police functions and basic criminal investigation.”>> Timeline: Events leading up to Berlin murder-suicide, aftermathThe review found that Cpl. Jarod Beal called Gleason, who denied knowing the friend who contacted police. No officer ever called the friend, attempted to locate Gleason or checked in on Fuentes, according to the report.Beal’s employment with the department was terminated as a result of mishandling the welfare check, Berlin Police Chief Jeff Lemoine said. The review also found that another report of a possible violation of the protective order against Gleason wasn’t properly investigated. Gleason was accused of driving past Fuentes’ home and the restaurant where she worked. The officer involved in that welfare check left the department before the internal review discovered that the call had been mishandled, Lemoine said. The release of the review follows a report released in October by the New Hampshire Department of Justice. That report also found that the call from Gleason’s friend was not properly investigated.”As a result of this review, the department has and continues to implement corrective actions and safeguards to prevent this from happening in the future,” Lemoine said in a statement included in the internal review. The review made training and policy recommendations, including empowering dispatchers and officers to intervene when a call needs more attention. It also called for legislation to add social media access to protective order language.Lemoine apologized for taking so long to release the review, which he said had been completed in October. He said personnel matters had to be resolved before the review was released.

      MANCHESTER, N.H. —

An internal review of how the Berlin Police Department handled the events leading up to the killing of a woman in a murder-suicide found that a welfare check of the woman and her estranged husband days before she was killed was not handled properly.

Marisol Fuentes, 25, was working behind the bar of La Casita restaurant on July 6, 2025, when she was shot and killed by Michael Gleason, 50, who then killed himself.

The department’s internal review examined several calls made by Fuentes, Gleason and others in the months before the murder-suicide.
