moves to make deporting foreign criminals easier"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) \u2014 Denmark unveiled a legal reform on Friday allowing foreigners who have been sentenced to at least one year of unconditional imprisonment for serious crimes to be deported.<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said the measure would affect any foreign national convicted of serious offences, such as aggravated assault and rape, though she acknowledged the idea \u2014 part of a series of legal changes \u2014 could conflict with European human rights conventions. <\/p>\n<p>Denmark will also tighten controls on foreigners without legal residence, introduce a new anklet monitor for criminal foreigners, reopen an embassy in Syria, and strengthen cooperation with authorities in Afghanistan. <\/p>\n<p>Frederiksen told a news conference that the government was acting \u201cunconventionally\u201d and was amending legislation rather than waiting for court rulings on deportation cases. <\/p>\n<p>Immigration and Integration Minister Rasmus Stoklund said 315 foreign criminals from countries outside the European Union had received sentences of more than a year over the last five years but were not expelled. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany of us find that hard to understand,\u201d he told the news conference. <\/p>\n<p>The announcement comes as the EU \u2014 which counts Denmark as a member \u2014 has been grappling with integration of foreign nationals and migrants and stiffening its legal arsenal. <\/p>\n<p>Last month, the 27-member country bloc began <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/a major overhaul of its migration system, including streamlined deportations and increased detentions, after years of fierce debate on the issue has seen the rise of far-right political parties.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">finalizing an overhaul<\/a> of its migration system, including tougher restrictions on accepting asylum claims. <\/p>\n<p>Many hard right-wing groups and political parties in Europe, and <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/immigration-trump-family-separation-law-enforcement-detention-deportation-76e1c6239c1522aae010590195f97db3\"
