{"id":84717,"date":"2026-05-18T02:03:35","date_gmt":"2026-05-18T02:03:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/84717\/"},"modified":"2026-05-18T02:03:35","modified_gmt":"2026-05-18T02:03:35","slug":"thousands-protest-israels-eurovision-participation-in-vienna","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/84717\/","title":{"rendered":"Thousands protest Israel\u2019s Eurovision participation in Vienna"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Bulgaria won the Eurovision Song Contest for the first time on Saturday night in Vienna as protests and broadcaster boycotts overshadowed the final.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Singer Dara secured victory with the song Bangaranga after a close contest with Israel\u2019s Noam Bettan, whose entry Michelle finished second amid demonstrations against Israel\u2019s participation throughout Eurovision week.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t &#13;<\/p>\n<p>The final took place under heavy security after thousands gathered in Vienna to protest against Israel\u2019s inclusion in the competition due to its genocidal war in Gaza.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Demonstrators marched through the Austrian capital carrying Palestinian flags and accusing organisers of applying different standards to Israel and Russia.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Five countries \u2014 Spain, the Netherlands, Ireland, Iceland and Slovenia \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.helsinkitimes.fi\/world-int\/28279-israel-cleared-to-enter-eurovision-as-finland-prepares-others-boycott.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">withdrew from the contest<\/a> in protest against the European Broadcasting Union\u2019s decision to allow Israel to compete.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Several broadcasters in those countries refused to air the event.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>The European Broadcasting Union has faced pressure over Israel\u2019s participation for a third consecutive year. Critics pointed to the organisation\u2019s decision to exclude Russia after the invasion of Ukraine while keeping Israel in the competition.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Amnesty International secretary-general Agnes Callamard <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2026\/05\/europe-failure-to-suspend-israel-from-eurovision-betrays-humanity-and-exposes-blatant-double-standards\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">criticised<\/a> the EBU earlier this week. She said the refusal to suspend Israel showed \u201cblatant double standards\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>An outdoor concert organised by pro-Palestinian groups took place in Vienna on Friday under the slogan \u201cNo Stage for Genocide\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Congolese-Austrian artist Patrick Bongola, one of the organisers, said inviting Israel to Eurovision was \u201can affront to all the people who believe in humanity, who believe in love and togetherness\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>About 2,000 demonstrators gathered in the city on Saturday before the final.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>In the first\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.helsinkitimes.fi\/culture\/28827-protesters-removed-during-israel-s-eurovision-semi-final-performance.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">semi-final\u00a0<\/a>earlier in the week, four spectators were removed from Vienna\u2019s Wiener Stadthalle during Bettan\u2019s performance after chants of \u201cstop the genocide\u201d were heard inside the arena.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Israel\u2019s result drew praise from Israeli officials despite the protests surrounding the contest.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Israeli defence minister Israel Katz congratulated Bettan in a post on <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Israel_katz\/status\/2055850129177891031\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">X<\/a>. He said the singer\u2019s performance answered what he called an \u201cincitement and defamation campaign\u201d led by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro S\u00e1nchez and other European politicians.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>S\u00e1nchez defended Spain\u2019s boycott before the final and said his government stood on \u201cthe right side of history\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>More than 1,000 artists signed an open letter last month urging fans to boycott Eurovision over Israel\u2019s participation. According to reports, the signatories included Macklemore and Paloma Faith.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>The EBU introduced new voting rules this year after criticism surrounding last year\u2019s televote process, when Israel also received strong public support.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Finland entered the contest among the favourites with performers Linda Lampenius and Pete Parkkonen and their song Liekinheitin. The duo finished sixth with 279 points, only two points behind Italy in fifth place.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Finland received 141 points from juries and 138 from viewers.
