Germany supports a return to diplomacy to end the war with Iran, Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said on Monday during talks in Berlin with his Turkish counterpart, Hakan Fidan.<\/p>\n
A military solution would lead nowhere, Wadephul said, adding that if Iran were prepared to abandon its uranium enrichment programme, \u201cwe would have a basis for negotiations.\u201d<\/p>\n
Fidan agreed, saying it was \u201cin the interest of the whole world to resolve major crises by diplomatic means as quickly as possible.\u201d He added that prolonging the war would have significant political and economic consequences.<\/p>\n
The meeting came after US President Donald Trump threatened Iran with destruction on Sunday, writing on his Truth Social platform that “the Clock is Ticking, and they better get moving, FAST, or there won’t be anything left of them.”<\/p>\n
Wadephul said he did not believe negotiations had stalled, but continued, and called for careful examination of Tehran\u2019s response to the latest US proposal.<\/p>\n
Israel is reported to be preparing for a resumption of hostilities, while an Iranian military spokesman was quoted by Iranian media as saying any further \u201cstupidity\u201d by the United States would be met with \u201ceven more destructive and heavy strikes.\u201d<\/p>\n
Fidan also urged the European Union to strengthen cooperation with Turkey in response to the wars in Iran and Ukraine, particularly in areas including combating irregular migration, regional security, securing energy corridors and counterterrorism.<\/p>\n
