Germany will send a Patriot<\/a> air defense unit to T\u00fcrkiye<\/a> in the coming weeks as part of NATO<\/a> efforts to strengthen protection along the alliance\u2019s southeastern flank, officials said.<\/p>\n

Germany\u2019s armed forces, the Bundeswehr, will establish a Patriot \u201cAir and Missile Defense Task Force\u201d that will work closely with the Turkish Armed Forces, the German Defense Ministry said in a statement.<\/p>\n

Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said Germany was taking on more responsibility within NATO, adding that the German Patriot unit and around 150 soldiers would replace a U.S. unit currently deployed in T\u00fcrkiye.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur air force is doing great, internationally respected work,\u201d Pistorius said. \u201cWith their professionalism, they will make an important contribution to protecting NATO airspace.\u201d<\/p>\n

The ministry said the German unit would operate under NATO\u2019s Integrated Air and Missile Defense framework.<\/p>\n
