Moller \u2013 Maersk, has secured \u20ac5 million from the EU\u2019s\u00a0Horizon Europe\u00a0research and innovation program to develop and\u00a0demonstrate offshore charging infrastructure for\u00a0stationary\u00a0vessels\u00a0at anchor with\u00a0their\u00a0engines running.<\/p>\n

The three-year SPARK project brings together eight partners across five countries to deploy and test a pilot\u00a0offshore\u00a0power\u00a0zone\u00a0solution in Skagen, described as\u00a0one of Northern Europe\u2019s busiest anchorage hubs,\u00a0targeting\u00a0greenhouse gas (GHG)\u00a0emissions generated by\u00a0idling ships\u00a0between operations.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
The\u00a0offshore\u00a0power\u00a0zone will enable vessels to plug into\u00a0an at-sea power point with electricity provided via the nearby\u00a0Port of Skagen.\u00a0The pilot will initially support a single ship connection to prove the concept in a live operational environment, with the goal of expanding the solution globally.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Besides technical delivery, the project will assess commercial viability and regulatory pathways to support wider adoption across the maritime\u00a0industry.<\/p>\n
\u201cNear-shore idling vessels\u00a0represent\u00a0a significant and often overlooked source of GHG emissions, making them a clear and immediate opportunity for decarbonisation,\u201d said Stillstrom\u00a0CEO Kristian Borum J\u00f8rgensen.<\/p>\n
\u201cProject SPARK\u00a0brings together partners from across the maritime ecosystem,\u00a0enabling\u00a0us to collectively accelerate offshore\u00a0power\u00a0from concept to real-world deployment,\u00a0delivering a practical\u00a0and economical\u00a0solution for the\u00a0maritime\u00a0sector.\u201d<\/p>\n
Integrated\u00a0vessel\u00a0charging technology firm Stillstrom\u00a0is leading\u00a0the project with partners being Aalborg University, DNV,\u00a0Maersk,\u00a0MARIN,\u00a0Port of Malta,\u00a0Port of Skagen\u00a0and\u00a0University College London. <\/p>\n
The\u00a0project\u00a0will\u00a0begin in June and will have an expected duration of 36 months.<\/p>\n
