{"id":86452,"date":"2026-05-19T18:23:15","date_gmt":"2026-05-19T18:23:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/86452\/"},"modified":"2026-05-19T18:23:15","modified_gmt":"2026-05-19T18:23:15","slug":"chp-run-municipalities-face-new-wave-of-detentions-arrests","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/86452\/","title":{"rendered":"CHP-run municipalities face new wave of detentions, arrests"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>            <a href=\"https:\/\/stockholmcf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Besiktas-Municipality.png\" data-caption=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"696\" height=\"386\" class=\"entry-thumb td-modal-image\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=\" http:=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- alt=\"\" title=\"Bes\u0327iktas\u0327 Municipality\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Besiktas-Municipality-696x386.png\"\/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"696\" height=\"386\" class=\"entry-thumb td-modal-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Besiktas-Municipality-696x386.png\"   alt=\"\" title=\"Bes\u0327iktas\u0327 Municipality\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Turkish authorities have detained five people in a new operation targeting \u0130stanbul\u2019s Be\u015fikta\u015f Municipality, controlled by the main opposition Republican People\u2019s Party (CHP), while courts have arrested 27 people in separate investigations into two other CHP-run municipalities, <a href=\"https:\/\/turkishminute.com\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/turkishminute.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Turkish Minute<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>The latest operation in Be\u015fikta\u015f was carried out as part of an investigation by the \u0130stanbul Chief Public Prosecutor\u2019s Office into allegations of bribery and money laundering, according to the Euronews Turkish service.<\/p>\n<p>The detainees include former Be\u015fikta\u015f deputy mayor Cevdet \u00c7al\u0131, Be\u015fikta\u015f Municipality personnel services manager B\u00fclent Karaka\u015f and CHP city council member \u0130lker Uluer.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors said police seized numerous digital materials as well as 90,000 US dollars and 5,000 euros believed to have been obtained through criminal activity.<\/p>\n<p>The operation marked the latest judicial action involving the Be\u015fikta\u015f Municipality, which was previously targeted in a separate investigation. The CHP\u2019s Be\u015fikta\u015f Mayor R\u0131za Akpolat was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.turkishminute.com\/2025\/01\/13\/mayor-of-chp-stronghold-in-istanbul-detained-in-bid-rigging-investigation4\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">detained<\/a>\u00a0on January 13, 2025, as part of an investigation into an alleged criminal organization led by Aziz \u0130hsan Akta\u015f, a businessman accused of rigging municipal tenders by bribing mayors and senior municipal officials.<\/p>\n<p>Akpolat was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.turkishminute.com\/2025\/01\/17\/turkish-court-arrests-opposition-mayor-over-bid-rigging-accusations5\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">arrested<\/a>\u00a0a few days later on charges of membership in a criminal organization, bid rigging and unlawful acquisition of property and was removed from office the same day by the Interior Ministry.<\/p>\n<p>Arrests in Eski\u015fehir and Denizli<\/p>\n<p>In the central province of Eski\u015fehir, 15 people were arrested as part of an investigation targeting the CHP-run Tepeba\u015f\u0131 Municipality after an operation on Thursday in which 25 people were\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.turkishminute.com\/2026\/05\/18\/turkish-police-detain-57-in-new-operation-targeting-istanbul-municipality\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">detained<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Eski\u015fehir Chief Public Prosecutor\u2019s Office said the investigation concerns allegations including repeated embezzlement, forgery, violations of tax law, laundering criminal proceeds and abuse of office.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors alleged that irregularities had been identified in some municipal tenders, particularly purchases made by the municipality\u2019s Culture, Arts and Social Affairs Directorate through direct procurement. They claimed fake bids were used and invoices were issued for services that were either not provided or billed above market value.<\/p>\n<p>Those arrested included Deputy Mayor Seyit Y\u0131ld\u0131zhan, chief of staff \u00d6zcan Erkaya, Director of Mukhtar Affairs Duygu G\u00fczelo\u011flu and acting Social Services Director Murat \u00c7evik, along with municipal personnel and private company officials. Ten other suspects were released under judicial supervision.<\/p>\n<p>Euronews also reported that police found an underground room in the garden of Erkaya\u2019s home containing nine cryptocurrency mining devices.<\/p>\n<p>In the western province of Denizli, Deputy Mayor Emrah Karan was among 12 people arrested in a separate bribery and bid-rigging investigation targeting the CHP-run Merkezefendi Municipality, the DHA news agency reported.<\/p>\n<p>The Denizli Chief Public Prosecutor\u2019s Office had\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.turkishminute.com\/2026\/05\/15\/turkish-police-detain-32-in-probes-targeting-chp-run-municipalities\/amp\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">issued<\/a>\u00a0detention warrants on May 15 for 13 people accused of taking bribes in municipal tender procedures.
