and other incentives to increase production of green\u00a0fertilisers\u00a0across the bloc, and subsidise the higher\u00a0fertiliser\u00a0prices now faced by farmers\u00a0from the disruption caused by the Iran war \u2014 in a major blow to major external suppliers like Morocco.<\/p>\n<p>The disruption of international\u00a0fertiliser\u00a0supply via the Strait of Hormuz, which has been blockaded by Iran in response to the military assaults against it by the United States and Israel, is expected to hit food production and supply in the coming months.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For example, disruptions to\u00a0sulphur\u00a0supply \u2013\u00a0a key \u200cfertiliser\u00a0ingredient \u2013\u00a0\u2060have already pushed Middle East\u00a0sulphur\u00a0prices about 35 percent higher since the start of the conflict in late February.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The current crisis echoes the severe market shocks of 2022, when Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine sent natural gas and fertiliser prices to record highs, exposing Europe\u2019s deep dependencies on energy and agricultural inputs.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/euobserver.com\/208068\/how-iran-war-exposes-europes-dangerous-dependency-on-fertilisers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/f9de6c25f0950498fb367162ee16a584-600x450.jpg\" class=\"attachment-thumbnail size-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0bloc\u2019s\u00a0agriculture\u00a0commissioner Christophe Hansen\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/plenary\/en\/debate-details.html?date=20260519&amp;detailBy=date\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told MEPs<\/a> in Strasbourg on Tuesday (19 May), that nitrogen\u00a0fertiliser\u00a0prices are about 70\u00a0percent\u00a0higher than the 2024 average, and significantly higher than pre-Covid levels.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He added\u00a0that\u00a0\u201dfertiliser\u00a0affordability is now at its lowest point since 2022, and this is already changing\u00a0farmers\u2019\u00a0behaviour\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Fertilisers\u00a0already account for\u00a0more than seven percent\u00a0of input costs for the EU farming sector\u00a0overall,\u00a0and\u00a016\u00a0percent\u00a0for arable crop farmers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The commission says that it will make available \u201cexceptional support\u201d\u00a0to European farmers facing high\u00a0fertiliser\u00a0costs but\u00a0did not specify precisely how much funding would be made available\u00a0from the EU budget. <\/p>\n<p>The figure, promised to be a \u201csubstantial amount\u201d,\u00a0will be revealed in another proposal later this summer, said the commission.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The EU Commission has set out a blueprint to
