Finland\u2019s Left Alliance reached its highest level of support in three decades in a new Helsingin Sanomat poll<\/a> published on Wednesday, while the Social Democratic Party retained its lead ahead of the country\u2019s other main parties.<\/p>\n

The survey, conducted for Helsingin Sanomat by research company Verian, placed the Left Alliance in fifth place with 11.0 per cent support. The result marked the party\u2019s strongest showing in the newspaper\u2019s polling data since the mid-1990s, shortly after the party was formed.<\/p>\n

The Social Democratic Party, known as SDP, remained Finland\u2019s most popular party with support at 24.3 per cent. Prime Minister Petteri Orpo\u2019s National Coalition Party, known as Kokoomus, followed in second place with 17.3 per cent.<\/p>\n

The Centre Party ranked third on 13.6 per cent, while the Finns Party stood close behind on 13.4 per cent. The difference between the two parties fell within the poll\u2019s margin of error.<\/p>\n

HS reported that support for both SDP and Kokoomus declined slightly from April. The newspaper said Kokoomus had already fallen to its weakest level in five years during the previous month\u2019s survey and that the decline continued in the latest figures.<\/p>\n

The combined support of Finland\u2019s governing parties reached 37.8 per cent, according to the poll.<\/p>\n

Left Alliance chair Minja Koskela has led the party during a period of rising support. HS said the party\u2019s current standing represented its strongest polling performance in around 30 years.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Verian collected responses through an online panel between 21 April and 18 May. The company interviewed 4,120 people for the survey.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The margin of error for the largest parties stood at around 1.5 percentage points in either direction.<\/p>\n
