{"id":89114,"date":"2026-05-22T02:46:48","date_gmt":"2026-05-22T02:46:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/89114\/"},"modified":"2026-05-22T02:46:48","modified_gmt":"2026-05-22T02:46:48","slug":"greenlanders-tell-americans-go-home-at-rowdy-opening-of-us-consulate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/89114\/","title":{"rendered":"Greenlanders tell Americans &#8216;go home&#8217; at rowdy opening of US Consulate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hundreds of <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/greenland\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"4468\">Greenlanders<\/a> protested outside a new U.S. Consulate in the capital of Nuuk on Thursday, telling American diplomats their presence on the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/arctic\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"3915\">Arctic<\/a> island isn\u2019t welcome.<\/p>\n<p>Protesters waved Greenlandic flags and signs that read \u201cStop USA\u201d while shouting \u201cgo home\u201d outside the U.S. Consulate.<\/p>\n<p>The <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/protests\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"77\">protest<\/a> coincided with the grand opening of the 30,000-square-foot diplomatic outpost. The consulate was previously located in a small red house on the outskirts of town. This time, the consulate is located in a much more prominent location in downtown Nuuk.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen was the most prominent politician who did not attend the grand opening.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The protesters\u2019 chants came in response to a recent visit from Gov. Jeff Landry (R-LA), whom President <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/donald-trump\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"4\">Donald Trump<\/a> appointed as his special envoy to Greenland. Before leaving Nuuk on Wednesday, Landry said it was \u201ctime for the U.S. to put its footprint back on Greenland.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGreenland needs the U.S.,\u201d he told AFP. \u201cI think that you\u2019re seeing the president talk about increasing national security operations and repopulating certain bases in Greenland.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The protest\u2019s organizer, Aqqalukkuluk Fontain, said the purpose of the demonstration was \u201cnot to provoke Donald Trump or Jeff Landry but to show the world that Greenland has its own democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This week, Landry drew local backlash when he handed chocolate chip cookies and MAGA caps to Greenlanders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThree months ago, Greenland was under threat of invasion and takeover, and [Landry] was one of the people supporting that statement,\u201d Greenland Business Association CEO Christian Keldsen said. \u201cThen three months later, you show up here wanting to make friends, handing out chocolate to children and trying to hand out MAGA caps.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The United States is seeking to increase its presence in Greenland. Trump previously threatened to take the island by force, which has led to strained diplomatic relations with <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/denmark\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"2585\">Denmark<\/a>. The Scandinavian country maintains control over the semi-autonomous territory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/world\/4574489\/jeff-landry-greenland-children-chocolate-chip-cookies\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/world\/4574489\/jeff-landry-greenland-children-chocolate-chip-cookies\/\">JEFF LANDRY TO GREENLAND CHILDREN: \u2018YOU CAN HAVE ALL THE CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES YOU CAN EAT\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump has since backed down on the threats, but he remains interested in Greenland. The issue has largely fallen out of the public spotlight since the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/iran\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"100\">Iran<\/a> war started, but closed-door talks regarding Greenland have recently taken place in <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/washington-dc\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"260\">Washington, D.C<\/a>.
