Much of that energy comes from its university, one of the largest in <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/scandinavia\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Scandinavia<\/a>, which gives the city a youthful buzz.<\/p>\n<p>The sun is shining (though when I visit in mid-April, the coastal breeze is sharp) and people are spilling onto the streets for coffee in the morning before pale ales at lunch.<\/p>\n<p>I grab an iced coffee at <a href=\"https:\/\/lacabra.com\/pages\/graven\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">La Cabra<\/a>, a <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2026\/05\/19\/americas-beloved-bakery-just-launched-uk-one-item-worth-hype-28433490\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">trendy bakery<\/a> and cafe that wouldn\u2019t look amiss in <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/hackney\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hackney<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The \u00a37 price tag is expectedly steep, but the vibe makes me feel like I could stay here for longer than a weekend.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"363\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/comp-1779359392.png\" class=\"article-image wp-image-28462564\" alt=\"\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tThe Scandi staple: coffee and a cardamom bun (Picture: Chris Buswell)<br \/>\nThe city gets its art on<\/p>\n<p>While I could easily spend my time in Aarhus burning holes in my wallet, there is plenty to see and do that won\u2019t break the bank. <\/p>\n<p>First up is <a href=\"https:\/\/konmuseum.dk\/english\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">K\u00d8N \u2013 Gender Museum Denmark,<\/a> which has small but interesting exhibitions that explore gender, equality and sexuality. Entry is 125DKK (just under \u00a315) for adults and under 18s go free. <\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re closed on Sundays and Mondays, so weekend visitors should keep that in mind.<\/p>\n<p>The standout is GENDER BENDER, which examines how we define gender today through a series of photographs of young people from across Denmark. <\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"544\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/IMG_0221-138d-rotated-e1779359525259.jpeg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-28462601\" alt=\"Part of an exhibition on gender at a museum in Aarhus\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tLearning and reflecting at the Gender Museum (Picture: Chris Buswell)<\/p>\n<p>It doesn\u2019t take long to get through, and soon enough I\u2019m heading to my next stop.<\/p>\n<p>As one of the city\u2019s biggest cultural draws, ARoS is impossible to miss. <\/p>\n<p>The contemporary art museum is one of the largest in Scandinavia, and it\u2019s best known for its rooftop <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aros.dk\/en\/aros-collection\/olafur-eliasson-your-rainbow-panorama-2011\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rainbow Panorama<\/a> \u2014 the circular, colour-filled walkway designed by Olafur Eliasson, visible from across the city.<\/p>\n<p>As Eliasson says, he created \u2018a space which virtually erases the boundaries between inside and outside\u2019. <\/p>\n<p>Even if you\u2019re not especially artsy, the views and photo opps are worth the 190 DKK (\u00a322-ish) admission.<\/p>\n<p>The culture fix<\/p>\n<p>If you want to understand Denmark, you must visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dengamleby.dk\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Den Gamle By<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Known as Aarhus\u2019 open-air museum, this sprawling living history village recreates Danish town life across the centuries through historic buildings, shops and workshops.<\/p>\n<p>Entry is 125DKK (around \u00a314) and kids go free. IMO, it\u2019s worth the cost.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"861\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/IMG_0392-af9e-rotated.jpeg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-28462623\" alt=\"\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tStepping back in time at the open-air museum (Picture: Chris Buswell)<\/p>\n<p>When you leave the museum, the giant domes on the hill are impossible to ignore. Curiosity gets the better of me, and when I take a closer look, I find myself at the entrance to the city\u2019s botanic gardens. <\/p>\n<p>With free entry and huge glasshouses growing tropical plants from across the world, it\u2019s the ideal place to spend an afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>A good feed, whatever the budget<\/p>\n<p>With sightseeing behind me, it\u2019s on to the most important part of any city break: the food. <\/p>\n<p>Whatever your budget, there\u2019s plenty to choose from. <a href=\"https:\/\/bankenfoodhall.dk\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Banken FoodHall<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/aarhusstreetfood.com\/en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Aarhus Street Food<\/a> are ideal for quick, cheap bites, and the hundreds of restaurants that line the city streets make it a dream for picky friends or travel partners. <\/p>\n<p>There is, truly, something, for everyone.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"363\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/comp-1779359034.png\" class=\"article-image wp-image-28462439\" alt=\"\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tGood grub (Picture: Chris Buswell)<\/p>\n<p>If you want to step things up a notch, head to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mefisto.dk\/en\/pizza-bar.aspx\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pizza &amp; Bar by Mefisto<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The menu is small, the pizzas delicious, and there\u2019s no shortage of craft beer to wash it down with.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re celebrating or want to splash out a bit, head to <a href=\"https:\/\/foodfamilygroup.dk\/masvino\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">MasVino Vinbodega<\/a>, a moody candlelit winebar with an open kitchen and a mammoth set menu with wine pairings. <\/p>\n<p>From handmade focaccia to tartare and the freshest of meat cuts, you\u2019ll be practically rolling out of the door. <\/p>\n<p>Not to mention the vintage champagne, which makes every impulsive corner-shop prosecco purchase feel like a mistake.<\/p>\n<p>Fashion week everyday<\/p>\n<p>As with everywhere in Denmark, it\u2019s clear that people in Aarhus care about how they look.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve packed some of my best gear, but I still feel less stylish than the Danes.<\/p>\n<p>Burberry-style trenches and overcoats are everywhere, the men are in an Aarhus uniform of baggy trousers and loafers, and the women have perfected that effortless formula of oversized layers that still look sharp and deliberate.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tAlternative city breaks for 2026\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>If that doesn\u2019t tempt you to overhaul your wardrobe, a wander through one of the city\u2019s many clothing stores certainly will.<\/p>\n<p>Alongside the big department stores like Magasin and Salling, vintage boutiques dominate the streets \u2013 particularly around the Latin Quarter, where my hotel, SOFS Boutique Hotel, is dangerously well placed. <\/p>\n<p>If you want to channel the local look, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/toejkrogen\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">T\u00f8jKrogen<\/a> and local favourite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/uniqclothing.dk\/?hl=en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">UNIQ<\/a> are both worth a visit.<\/p>\n<p>Even more reasons to return<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s much to do in Aarhus, but it is what\u2019s still to come that makes the city feel exciting. <\/p>\n<p>The harbourfront is in the middle of a huge regeneration project and a walk down there makes that clear. <\/p>\n<p>New bars, cafes, apartments and even a cable-ski park are already taking shape, with plenty more on the way. <\/p>\n<p>A last-minute visit to the Lighthouse, the country\u2019s tallest building, brings it together perfectly. <\/p>\n<p>More than just another tall city building, the exhibition below sea level tells the story of Aarhus and its bay before you shoot up to the 44th floor for sweeping views across the skyline and coastline.<\/p>\n<p>Aarhus catches you off guard in the best way. <\/p>\n<p>It has the style, food and cultural chops of a bigger destination, but with a laid-back pace that makes it easy to explore. <\/p>\n<p>Copenhagen may land most of the headlines, but Aarhus has plenty of reasons to step out of its shadow, and more than enough to warrant a return trip.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tGetting there and where to stay\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ryanair.com\/ie\/en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ryanair<\/a> flies direct from <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/stansted-airport\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">London Stansted<\/a> to Aarhus. Prices start from \u00a367 return in June. You can also fly from <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/gatwick-airport\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/gatwick-airport\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">London Gatwick<\/a> and <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/heathrow-airport\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/heathrow-airport\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">London Heathrow<\/a> to Billund with <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/british-airways\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">British Airways<\/a> and Norweigan. Prices start at \u00a3117 return in June. If you\u2019re flying into Billund, you\u2019ll also need to take the 912X bus from outside the airport terminal for 1.5 hours \u2013 this costs around \u00a316 each way. <\/p>\n<p>There is plenty of accommodation on offer, depending on budget and location: <\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re after a central location with no frills and a lower-mid price range, stay at SOFS Boutique Hotel. Prices start at \u00a3142 per night in June.<br \/>\nIf you want to take it up a notch, check out Radisson RED Aarhus. It\u2019s in a solid location and is part of a reliable chain. Price start at \u00a3160 per night in June.<br \/>\nFor those of you wanting to splash out on this trip, Hotel Royal is a must. Referred to as \u201cAarhus\u2019 Best Hotel\u201d, its decor and impressive history will appease even the pickiest traveller. Oh, and Will Smith stayed here last year.
