BERLIN, May 22 (Reuters) – A U.S. citizen who contracted Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo, \u200cwhere an outbreak of a rare strain has \u200ckilled over 130 people, is not critically ill and his wife \u200band four children have tested negative, the Berlin hospital where the family is being treated said on Friday.<\/p>\n
“Because the course of the illness can change, he remains \u200cunder close observation and \u2060is receiving treatment,” Charite university hospital said in a statement. “He is being cared for \u2060in the high-security area of the specialized isolation unit.”<\/p>\n
The patient’s wife and four children “are currently asymptomatic and quarantined \u200bin a \u200bseparate part of the \u200bunit – an initial PCR \u200ctest detected no Ebola virus infection.”<\/p>\n
The patient, identified by the Serge Christian mission organization as medical missionary Dr. Peter Stafford, contracted Ebola while treating patients in the DRC, where he had been living with his family.<\/p>\n
The \u200cWhite House said Stafford and \u200bhis family had been brought to \u200bGermany because it \u200bis 12 hours closer to the DRC \u200cthan the United States.<\/p>\n
Charite said \u200bin its statement \u200bthat the patient room had been made as child-friendly as possible, adding that the children were \u200bable to see \u200ctheir father “through a glass partition, and family members \u200bcan communicate via an intercom.”<\/p>\n
