Finland\u2019s education minister has proposed moving school summer holidays two weeks later and adding a new spring break in April, opening a debate that has already exposed divisions inside the government coalition.<\/p>\n

Education Minister Anders Adlercreutz sent a proposal prepared by the Ministry of Education and Culture out for public consultation on Friday, despite the plan not being included in the government programme and lacking political agreement between coalition parties.<\/p>\n

Under the proposal, the school year in comprehensive schools would end around mid-June instead of late May. Pupils would then return to school after the middle of August.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The reform would also introduce a new spring holiday of at least one week at the end of April. The total number of school days would remain unchanged at 190 days a year, meaning the longer spring break would reduce time from other holidays, including the summer break.<\/p>\n

The ministry said the aim was to distribute holidays more evenly across the school year and reduce the length of the uninterrupted spring term.<\/p>\n

\u201cHoliday periods spread more evenly throughout the school year would support pupils\u2019 recovery, rest and wellbeing,\u201d the ministry memo stated.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Adlercreutz said the proposal was designed primarily around family life rather than the needs of business or tourism.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cNow we are looking for a solution to how parents\u2019 summer holidays could better align with children\u2019s summer holidays,\u201d he said during a press conference.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The minister argued that Finland\u2019s school calendar differs from most neighbouring countries, where schools usually begin later in August and summer holidays start later in June.<\/p>\n

According to the ministry\u2019s international comparison, Finnish schools begin the autumn term about a week earlier than schools in other Nordic countries.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The proposal would bring Finland closer to what Adlercreutz described as a more \u201cEuropean rhythm\u201d.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The reform could also affect upper secondary admissions and vocational entrance processes. The ministry memo said final assessments in comprehensive schools, applications to upper secondary education and admission decisions would all move roughly two weeks later.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
That would likely push admission results into late June, acceptance deadlines into July and waiting list admissions into late August or early September.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The ministry said matriculation examinations would likely remain unchanged, meaning university application timetables would not face major disruption.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Teachers\u2019 union OAJ has strongly opposed moving the summer holidays, while parts of Finland\u2019s tourism industry have supported the idea for years.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The consultation process is now underway. Any legislative changes would require political backing from the coalition government before moving forward in parliament.<\/p>\n
