Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan on Sunday reversed his decision to close a liberal private university in \u0130stanbul after protests by students and faculty members, Turkish Minute<\/a> reported, citing the Agence France-Presse.<\/p>\n

The decree reversing the decision published in the Official Gazette two days after Erdo\u011fan ordered the closure of \u0130stanbul Bilgi University during the academic year.<\/p>\n

Hundreds of students and faculty members demonstrated earlier Sunday outside the university\u2019s main campus, which had been closed since Friday, demanding that it reopen.<\/p>\n

The closure order cited a law allowing private universities to be shut down if \u201cthe expected level of education and training \u2026 is insufficient,\u201d an allegation rejected by Bilgi students and staff.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will stay here until the university reopens its doors,\u201d student union activist Emir Aydo\u011fan said during the protest.<\/p>\n

Erdo\u011fan, who has ruled Turkey since 2003, first as prime minister and then as president, has faced criticism from rights groups over what they describe as authoritarian measures targeting critics and opponents.<\/p>\n
