We stay with Ukraine.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated Friday that America would backtrack from Ukraine peace talks it was leading, saying they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/releases\/office-of-the-spokesperson\/2026\/05\/secretary-of-state-marco-rubio-remarks-to-press-10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">&#8220;were not fruitful, unfortunately&#8221;<\/a> and adding, &#8220;If someone else would like to handle it, they should.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>European officials have in recent weeks discussed whether to reach out directly to Russian President Vladimir Putin for negotiations, with names such as former German Chancellor Angela Merkel being floated for the role \u2014 although she said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/germany-angela-merkel-eu-russia-ukraine-war\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">she wouldn&#8217;t be the right person<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul <a href=\"https:\/\/www.welt.de\/politik\/ausland\/plus69f9b6a86fe2dee7bfb1348d\/johann-wadephul-im-interview-die-militaerische-option-gegenueber-iran-besteht.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">told German daily Welt<\/a> earlier this month that the E3 group was &#8220;making a fresh attempt to re-enter negotiations \u2014 with Europe playing a greater role in the coming weeks and months.&#8221; Merz hosted peace talks for Ukraine in Berlin in December, involving the Americans but not the Russians, with little progress.<\/p>\n<p>The new E3 talks with Umerov in Berlin come amid simmering tensions between Merz and Zelenskyy after the German chancellor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/20\/260518-BK-letter-to-PEC-et-al.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">issued a letter<\/a> offering Ukraine a downsized &#8220;associate membership&#8221; before potentially becoming a full EU member at a later stage.
