And although I had plenty of fun with Alex Kidd in Miracle World, a game I can still beat on muscle memory alone, it wasn’t long before I lucked into getting my hands on the successor console, the SEGA Mega Drive – or SEGA Genesis for those in the States. And thanks to the likes of Sonic the Hedgehog and Streets of Rage, my love for video games was truly beginning to develop.

So, cue my excitement when LEGO announced that its next brick-built gaming console model would be that very machine, with 40926 SEGA Genesis / Mega Drive. Follow that up with a quick turn to hesitation when it became clear that this wouldn’t be something on the scale of the 71374 Nintendo Entertainment System or 10306 Atari 2600, but rather a more compact build at a lower price point, offering up a miniaturised take on the console.

This LEGO SEGA Genesis / Mega Drive runs at 479 pieces and launches on 1 June 2026, for just US$39.99 / AU$69.99 / £34.99 / €39.99. Off to a great start so far.

Inside the box are the four bags that make up the build, the instructional manual, a couple of loose flexi tubes that’ll be used as controller cables later on, and a sticker sheet which will help us in differentiating between the two main regional models of the console.

I was a little disappointed to see that there’s no write-up introducing the console in the beginning of the book, just these two photos of the original hardware at the back.

The actual build of the console starts out fairly straightforward, and right away we start to see the small scale of this build with the outer dimensions of the console part measuring just 6 in (16 cm) wide and 4.5 in (12 cm) deep.

Before we get to building the top cover, we do get this wonderful easter egg on the inside with a very simple, LEGO Art-style rendition of Sonic’s face. It actually manages an impressive visage of the character with a little 3D depth in such tight quarters, so I’m quite endeared to it.

Once the front segment of the top casing comes in, we also get out first bit of regional variation, with only the ‘Mega Drive’ version of the console featuring the console title on this portion of the chassis – the Genesis has it closer to the cartridge slot. Along with providing all the stickers you need to build the version you most relate to, you also get two sets of any corresponding pieces, so you’re not locked into one type! The instruction book defaults to the Genesis version, even if the box in your region displays the Mega Drive on its front, but each associated step highlights the other option at the same time.

Here’s the top of the console and a look at all of the other alternate piece/stickers. It makes sense that this is all done via stickers for a small, fairly niche set like this with two possible configurations, but I don’t think I’ve ever cursed LEGO stickers as much as I did trying to get the “POWER” and “ON” labels onto those curved pieces in a consistent fashion. I did okay with the Mega Drive ones but I have to live with the Genesis flavour being a little wonky, unfortunately.

Here’s the whole main console part done. And honestly, it looks far better than any of the early promotional images implied. It’s a very nice rendition of the genuine console at a smaller scale, managing to capture all of the crucial parts from the ports on the front and back to the very old-school physical sliders and buttons on the top.

I’m especially fond of how simple but effective the build is for the grille on the left-hand side, even taken out of context I find it oddly pleasing to look at?

And you’ve gotta hand it to LEGO, not only is this an absolutely adorable miniature take on a SEGA Genesis / Mega Drive cartridge at just a 4×5 size, but the sticker representing the cartridge art for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 looks lovely. The cartridge slots nicely into the top of the console without locking in at all, so it’s easy to slide in and out, and I’m tempted to build a bunch more of these with my own custom stickers for other games I loved as a child.

Next up is the set of two controllers, and unfortunately out of everything these have come out the least convincing, but I can’t imagine there was much else to do at this size. They’re real small, and admittedly pretty cute in the flesh, but what makes this tough is that we already got a near-scale take on the exact controller with the 40769 SEGA Genesis Controller GWP, which was excellent.

The d-pad pieces are printed though, which is nice! And the brick-built connectors plug in nice and firmly to the faux controller ports with locking hinge pieces. But there are no button labels are attempt at representing the Start button, so they feel a little incomplete.

Here’s what it all looks like together, in both the Genesis and Mega Drive configurations. I was ready to hate this model, but once you accept that it’s not a 1:1 or near-1:1 scale build it’s actually a very decent little build:

Final Thoughts

40926 SEGA Genesis / Mega Drive genuinely surprised me as a faithful representation of the classic SEGA console on a small scale, turning out much better in the real world than it looked in LEGO’s marketing shots in the lead-up to launch.

In fact, if there’s anything wrong with this set it’s that it exists in the same timeline as sets like 71374 Nintendo Entertainment System or 10306 Atari 2690, which are both great but have definitely set up an expectation for LEGO’s retro console sets that this one doesn’t fit into. If those didn’t exist, I feel the initial reception for the Genesis / Mega Drive would’ve been a little kinder. Well, aside from the controllers, perhaps.

At US$39.99 / AU$69.99 / £34.99 and 479 pieces, this is a low-stakes investment of time and cash for SEGA tragics that might want to display what is, for some, a defining early piece of video game hardware, without having to seek out a second-hand version of the real thing. Bring on the Mega Drive 2 next, please!

As a bonus, here’s how the LEGO SEGA Genesis looks next to my Japanese-region SEGA Mega Drive, which shares a name and overall design with the PAL version of the console but also slightly borrows the red trim from the Genesis. I even have the same cartridge! Though mine’s seen better days:

              Build

Fairly basic, and small, but does a good job of representing the key lines and features of the console. The controllers are a little awkward, though

              Display Value

Small size makes it easy to fit in anywhere on a display, though you’ll need to wrangle the controller cables/tube pieces as they really want to lay out straight

              Real Value

Decently affordable, unlike other retro games console sets, and although only one element type comes printed the stickers all look good

              Innovation

A few interesting techniques to get the curves and ports right, but there’s nothing especially noteworthy

              Keepability

This will probably outlast my actual SEGA Mega Drive, sadly.
