Norway will begin talks with France on joining its nuclear umbrella<\/a>, French President Emmanuel Macron and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere announced on Wednesday, marking a significant shift in European defense cooperation.<\/p>\n

The announcement came during a meeting in Paris, where the two leaders also signed a broader defense agreement that includes Norway joining a French-led nuclear weapons initiative.<\/p>\n

Norway has traditionally relied heavily on NATO and the U.S.<\/a> nuclear umbrella as part of its security strategy. However, the new agreement signals a move toward deeper defense coordination within Europe.<\/p>\n

Stoere stressed that NATO and the United States would remain Norway\u2019s primary deterrence framework, but described France\u2019s nuclear capabilities as an important contribution to the alliance.<\/p>\n

Under the agreement, Norway would participate in what France describes as \u201cforward nuclear deterrence,\u201d allowing European partners to become more closely involved in French strategic thinking on nuclear defense.<\/p>\n

Macron Pushes European Strategic Autonomy<\/p>\n

Macron said the agreement established a principle of mutual assistance between France and Norway and would contribute to Europe\u2019s ambitions for greater strategic autonomy.<\/p>\n

The initiative follows France\u2019s proposal in March to extend the protection of its nuclear umbrella to other European nations. In practice, the policy means that an attack on a participating country could potentially trigger a French nuclear response.<\/p>\n

Norway joins Poland and Lithuania as countries receiving French nuclear protection arrangements. Both nations also share borders with Russia.<\/p>\n

Security Concerns Drive European Cooperation<\/p>\n

The agreement comes as European countries seek to strengthen defense cooperation amid heightened tensions with Russia and uncertainty surrounding future U.S. commitments to European security.<\/p>\n

Stoere said closer cooperation between European nations and transatlantic allies was necessary to strengthen overall security.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis closer cooperation will make European and transatlantic security stronger,\u201d he said, adding that Europe needed to increase defense spending and coordinate investments more effectively.<\/p>\n

Norway, which has a population of 5.6 million, is a NATO member but not part of the European Union. The Nordic country shares an Arctic border with Russia.<\/p>\n

Despite the new defense framework, Stoere clarified that nuclear weapons would not be stationed in Norway during peacetime.<\/p>\n
