{"id":94910,"date":"2026-05-29T18:53:12","date_gmt":"2026-05-29T18:53:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/94910\/"},"modified":"2026-05-29T18:53:12","modified_gmt":"2026-05-29T18:53:12","slug":"hungarys-magyar-secures-frozen-e16-4bn-from-brussels-but-only-if-string-of-conditions-met-euobserver","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/94910\/","title":{"rendered":"Hungary\u2019s Magyar secures frozen \u20ac16.4bn from Brussels \u2013 but only if string of conditions met \u2013 EUobserver"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hungary\u2019s new government will have to work double time in order to obtain billions of previously frozen EU funds, following a political agreement with the European Commission on Friday (29 May).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf every time I come here, I go back with this amount of money, I\u2019ll be coming here more often,\u201d Hungary\u2019s prime minister P\u00e9ter\u00a0Magyar joked to reporters in Brussels at a press conference with commission president Ursula von der Leyen.<\/p>\n<p>In reality, Magyar will only return to Budapest with an agreement to access \u20ac16.4bn in proposed funds, representing some 13 percent of Hungary\u2019s total budget.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The challenges faced by Magyar\u2019s Tisza government are considerable.<\/p>\n<p>The \u20ac16.4bn is composed of\u00a0 \u20ac10bn in pandemic Covid-era funds, \u20ac4.2bn in cohesion funding, while the remaining \u20ac2.2bn is geared towards academic freedom.
