Police in Helsinki are investigating a fire that destroyed a protected wooden apartment building in the K\u00e4pyl\u00e4 district after evidence pointed to a cigarette left on a porch as the likely cause.<\/p>\n

The blaze broke out shortly before 1pm on Thursday at a residential property on Peltolantie in the historic Puu-K\u00e4pyl\u00e4 area, sending thick smoke across the neighbourhood and prompting emergency warnings for nearby residents.<\/p>\n

Firefighters, police and ambulance crews were dispatched after reports of flames on the porch of the building.<\/p>\n

More than ten rescue units responded to the scene as the fire spread through the structure.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Authorities urged people in the area to avoid the smoke and advised nearby residents to close windows, doors and ventilation systems.<\/p>\n

The building, a protected wooden property dating from the early development of the K\u00e4pyl\u00e4 district, suffered extensive damage. Officials said the structure is no longer fit for habitation.<\/p>\n

Police have opened a criminal investigation on suspicion of causing danger to the public.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
According to a statement issued by Helsinki Police, investigators currently believe a burning cigarette was left on the building’s porch, igniting the fire.<\/p>\n

Detective Chief Inspector Jari Korkalainen said one person is suspected in connection with the incident. He told Finnish media that the suspect was also the only person injured in the fire and required hospital treatment.<\/p>\n

Investigators said that the incident appears to have been accidental rather than deliberate.<\/p>\n
