For me, Amsterdam fell into the second category, and now I’ve been every year for the past eight years. Amsterdam, situated in the Netherlands, has a rich history. It began as a small fishing village on the banks of the River Amstel.

Over the centuries, it grew into one of Europe’s most important trading centres. During the Dutch Golden Age of the 17th century, the city became one of the wealthiest cities in the world, attracting merchants and artists. The city’s famous canal network was developed during this period, creating the distinctive layout visitors still admire today.

What fascinates me most about Amsterdam is its architecture. The narrow canal houses, with their ornate gables and centuries of history, give the city a character unlike anywhere else in Europe.

Walking along the canals feels like stepping into a living museum, yet the city never feels stuck in the past. Historic buildings sit comfortably alongside modern cafes, galleries, restaurants and plenty of shops.

I particularly love visiting the Moco Museum in Amsterdam, the Van Gogh Museum, and eating at Pancakes Amsterdam and Sandwichshop Amsterdam.

The canals themselves are one of Amsterdam’s greatest attractions. Whether viewed from a bridge, explored by boat, or simply by wandering the streets, they provide a sense of calm that I’ve never felt anywhere else.

Another reason I enjoy returning is the climate. Contrary to popular belief, I’ve often experienced surprisingly warm weather during my visits.

On my most recent trip earlier this month, temperatures reached 28C, making it perfect weather for sitting beside the canals, enjoying outdoor terraces and exploring the city on foot.

It’s also just shy of an hour’s flight from London, although I love hopping on a cruise over to the country to enjoy a more relaxed way of travelling.

After eight consecutive years of visiting the city, I still haven’t grown tired of it. Its close proximity to other areas, such as Edam, also makes it a great base for exploring.

The combination of rich history, stunning architecture and picturesque canals continues to draw me back year after year.

There are some places you visit and remember fondly, and there are other places that have you longing…

[101
199,49738,49736,49735,71,26416,49737,200,49739
post-95509","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-amsterdam","tag-amsterdam","tag-amsterdam-weather","tag-canal-houses","tag-dutch-golden-age","tag-europe","tag-holiday","tag-moco-museum","tag-netherlands","tag-visiting-amsterdam
["GET
