{"id":95533,"date":"2026-05-30T14:45:10","date_gmt":"2026-05-30T14:45:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/95533\/"},"modified":"2026-05-30T14:45:10","modified_gmt":"2026-05-30T14:45:10","slug":"university-of-helsinki-receives-grant-for-project-combining-ecology-economics-and-statistics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/95533\/","title":{"rendered":"University of Helsinki receives grant for project combining ecology, economics and statistics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/sustainabilityonline.net\/tag\/university-of-helsinki\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">University of Helsinki<\/a> has been awarded \u20ac2.5 million by the Jane and Aatos Erkko Foundation to support an interdisciplinary <a href=\"https:\/\/sustainabilityonline.net\/tag\/research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">research<\/a> project aimed at bringing natural capital into decision-making.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project, which will explore ways to make the impacts of <a href=\"https:\/\/sustainabilityonline.net\/category\/biodiversity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">biodiversity<\/a> visible in society, will bring together elements of ecology, economics and advanced statistical modelling, the university said in a statement, to explore the interconnectivity between biodiversity and economics.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018An interconnected whole\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBiodiversity and ecosystem services cannot be examined merely as separate benefits, because together they form an interconnected whole,\u201d commented Professor Anna-Liisa Laine of the University of Helsinki, one of the researchers on the project.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project will seek to foster the development of \u2018cost-effective and reliable tools\u2019 to support decision-making, and enable governments, policymakers and businesses to treat conservation, restoration and sustainable land use not simply as an environmental cost, but an investment in societal resilience.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBiodiversity affects human well-being, health, and the economy in many ways, but these benefits are often not incorporated into decision-making,\u201d said Professor Lassi Ahlvik, another researcher on the project.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe project aims to develop tools that enable natural capital to be better reflected in societal decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Future economic scenarios<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As they note, the research will also encourage the development of statistical methods capable of linking <a href=\"https:\/\/sustainabilityonline.net\/tag\/ecology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">ecological<\/a> monitoring data with societal registries and future economic scenarios, enabling more accurate mid- to long-range forecasting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOne of the project\u2019s key challenges is to combine complex ecological datasets with economic and societal models in a way that enables reliable predictions of environmental change and its impacts on people,\u201d added Professor Jarno Vanhatalo, a further researcher.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year, the Jane and Aatos Erkko Foundation awarded grants to a total of five research projects at the University of Helsinki.
