{"id":96016,"date":"2026-05-31T10:23:38","date_gmt":"2026-05-31T10:23:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/96016\/"},"modified":"2026-05-31T10:23:38","modified_gmt":"2026-05-31T10:23:38","slug":"girona-coach-michel-sanchez-leaves-after-relegation-amid-reported-links-to-ajax-job-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/96016\/","title":{"rendered":"Girona coach M\u00edchel S\u00e1nchez leaves after relegation amid reported links to Ajax job"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">GIRONA, Spain (AP) \u2014 The coach who led unheralded Girona to a surprise Spanish title challenge in 2024 and a Champions League debut left the club Thursday after it was relegated from the top tier.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">M\u00edchel S\u00e1nchez &#8220;will not continue at Girona,\u201d the Catalan club said in a statement Thursday, several days after the team drew 1-1 at home with Elche when a win would have retained a place in La Liga.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">S\u00e1nchez was praised for \u201cthe humane, approachable, and respectful manner he has maintained at all times with the members, fans, management, and all the club\u2019s staff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">Dutch media reported this week that S\u00e1nchez is in talks with Ajax about taking over at the four-time European champion.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">The 50-year-old S\u00e1nchez joined Girona in 2021 and guided the team to promotion from the second tier.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">The club, which is part of the Abu Dhabi-backed City Football Group, then shocked European soccer in the 2023-24 season by leading the La Liga standings as late as January and finishing third behind Real Madrid and Barcelona.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">Girona\u2019s star player that season, Savinho, then joined its parent club Manchester City. (AP Photo\/Antonio Calanni, File)<\/p>\n<p>      <\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">PARIS (AP) \u2014 French police detained over 400 people involved in violent clashes in Paris and other French cities that erupted Saturday night after Paris Saint-Germain won the Champions League title.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">Seven officers were injured as football fans set off fires and vandalized shops, Interior Minister Laurent Nu\u00f1ez said, describing the violence as \u201cabsolutely unacceptable.\u201d One small group even tried to storm a Paris police station.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">Nu\u00f1ez said rioting took place in about 15 cities in France, and that nearly 400 people were detained in all, with nearly 300 of them in Paris alone.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">But he said that planned celebrations for the team&#8217;s win on Sunday afternoon at the Champ de Mars, near the Eiffel Tower, would go ahead as scheduled. The PSG team will then be hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron at the Elysee presidential palace. <\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">Fans began celebrating in Paris after the final whistle Saturday evening in Budapest, Hungary, where Paris Saint-Germain won by beating Arsenal on penalties in a dramatic final. <\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">Fans marched along the avenues near Paris&#8217; Arc de Triomphe monument, with some setting off flares and blaring car horns. Around 20,000 people gathered on the Champs-Elysees, where police worked to contain the crowd.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">The Paris police prefecture said smaller groups caused disturbances in various locations, with some vandalizing shops and setting fires. Cars were also set ablaze.
