Vladimir Zelensky\u2019s\u00a0decision to\u00a0give a\u00a0Ukrainian military unit an\u00a0honorary title linked to\u00a0the Ukrainian Insurgent Army* has sparked a\u00a0dispute between Kiev and Warsaw, The Telegraph reported.<\/p>\n
The move drew sharp criticism in\u00a0Poland. Among those who condemned it\u00a0were President Karol Nawrocki, Prime Minister Donald Tusk, former president Lech Walesa and other political figures.<\/p>\n
Last week, Zelensky attended the reburial of\u00a0the remains of\u00a0Andrey Melnik, one of\u00a0the leaders of\u00a0the Organization of\u00a0Ukrainian Nationalists*, in\u00a0the Kiev Region. On\u00a0Wednesday, May 27, he\u00a0granted the separate Special Operations Center \u00abNorth\u00bb of\u00a0the Special Operations Forces of\u00a0the Armed Forces of\u00a0Ukraine the honorary title \u00abnamed after the heroes of\u00a0the Ukrainian Insurgent Army*.\u00bb<\/p>\n
During the Great Patriotic War, the Ukrainian Insurgent Army* fought against Soviet forces and collaborated with the Nazis. The Organization of\u00a0Ukrainian Nationalists* and the Ukrainian Insurgent Army* are associated with numerous crimes, including the Volyn massacre\u00a0\u2014 the mass killing of\u00a0Polish civilians in\u00a0Volyn in\u00a01943. Ukrainians who refused to\u00a0cooperate with the nationalists were also among the victims.<\/p>\n
