The superstar actor is not tech illiterate; he\u2019s just on the set of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/a-minecraft-movie-squared\/\" id=\"auto-tag_a-minecraft-movie-squared\" data-tag=\"a-minecraft-movie-squared\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">A Minecraft Movie Squared<\/a>,\u201d the highly anticipated sequel to 2025\u2019s family blockbuster \u2014 and, as he puts it, looks \u201cabsolutely ridiculous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cYou just have to trust me, I look pretty silly,\u201d Momoa says, laughing as we log onto the video call. He can\u2019t say much about reprising his role, but teases: \u201cWe are definitely playing pretty hard over here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tPlay has been a major part of Momoa\u2019s everyday life since he was a child \u2014 all thanks to his mother, Coni.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI was raised by a single mother who was an artist and always encouraged me to play,\u201d Momoa says. \u201cShe\u2019s the one who taught me how to climb and enjoy being outdoors. She really supported the arts and creativity. I didn\u2019t have brothers and sisters or anyone to play with, so I would build <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/lego\/\" id=\"auto-tag_lego\" data-tag=\"lego\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lego<\/a> with her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tOnce Momoa had kids of his own \u2014 Lola Iolani and Nakoa-Wolf Momoa \u2014 he made sure to pass down those lessons about the importance of family playtime. And Lego was right at the center.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThose were always the big gifts,\u201d Momoa says about the colorful brick sets. \u201cIt was really essential for my kids, us sitting together and being able to build these different worlds.\u201d One of their most memorable family builds was the iconic \u201cStar Wars\u201d starship, the Millennium Falcon. \u201cWe got the Death Star, too,\u201d Momoa adds gleefully. \u201cIt was a big one for Wolfie and me, like that was the longest ever [build], but \u2018Star Wars\u2019 was such a huge one for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThose cherished family memories were a huge reason why Momoa was \u201chonored\u201d to partner with Lego on its \u201cNever Stop Playing\u201d campaign. The PSA is timed ahead of World Play Day on June 11. It\u2019s the Lego Group\u2019s annual observation of the UN\u2019s International Day of Play, a day dedicated to celebrating and protecting children\u2019s right to play.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cIt was an amazing opportunity to, the older my kids are getting, have something that really connects with their childhood and these memories. They were really excited that I was doing this,\u201d Momoa says. \u201cIt\u2019s also something that\u2019s just extremely important to me; my whole life is about playing. It\u2019s such an important thing \u2014 to keep creativity alive. That\u2019s my M.O. I had the most amazing time shooting this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe whimsical PSA features Momoa as Lego\u2019s newest Playmaker. His mission: help families rediscover the power of play, as 61% percent of parents surveyed by the Lego Group admitted that their child plays less than they did when they were younger. The solution: a simple \u201cbrick click,\u201d the act of clicking two Lego bricks together.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe new research, conducted among 30,000 parents and 15,000 children aged 5-12 globally, found that five hours of playtime a week boosts family happiness and wellbeing, but 44% of the families surveyed didn\u2019t hit that threshold. In fact, the data showed that more than 60 million families don\u2019t play together at all, with those surveyed citing barriers such as work, screen time, household chores, cost and a lack of safe spaces as impediments to fun.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tMomoa has a long professional history with Lego: he voiced Aquaman in 2019\u2019s \u201cThe Lego Movie 2: The Second Part,\u201d and he has the mini-figure to match. Aquaman was Momoa\u2019s first lookalike Lego, and he couldn\u2019t wait to show it to his awestruck kids.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThey love playing with it, and they can have me against Black Manta \u2014 it\u2019s a trip,\u201d he says, adding that his kids aren\u2019t the only youngsters who the toy brings joy. \u201cTo go to hospitals and sign them, it\u2019s a beautiful thing to be part of the Lego brand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSince then, Momoa\u2019s \u201cDune\u201d warrior, Duncan Idaho, and his \u201cMinecraft\u201d gamer, Garrett \u201cThe Garbage Man\u201d Garrison, have also been commemorated in brick form. What is it like to have all these playable toys that look like him?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s pretty awesome!\u201d Momoa exclaims. \u201cYou grow up playing with these your whole life, and then they make a little character about something you\u2019ve done \u2014 it\u2019s flattering, and it\u2019s cool.\u201d He adds, \u201cThey made me a special one as the Playmaker.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tMomoa\u2019s latest DC role, the comic book antihero Lobo, has a Lego minifigure, too, but the design isn\u2019t based on the actor\u2019s \u201cSupergirl\u201d look \u2014 at least, not yet. (Your move, Lego.) Nevertheless, Momoa is still thrilled to make his long-held dream of playing the character a reality in the film, starring Milly Alcock, which debuts later this month. \u201cIt\u2019s definitely a dream-come-true moment,\u201d he says, thinking back 40 years to when he first saw the character in the comics. \u201cHopefully it really resonates with people and they like it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tUp next, Momoa will appear in the third installment of Denis Villeneuve\u2019s \u201cDune\u201d movie, bringing this conversation full circle as Wolfie also booked a role in the film. \u201cHe\u2019s always been with me on set,\u201d Momoa said, declining to dive into details of seeing his son in action. \u201cThe nice thing is, when they were little, I\u2019d always bring my babies everywhere. You can easily bring them everywhere and be able to constantly play.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tOne of Momoa\u2019s most playful roles to date is his delightfully deranged villain Dante from the \u201cFast and Furious\u201d movies.
