It lies along the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Baltic-Sea\" class=\"md-crosslink autoxref \" data-show-preview=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Baltic Sea<\/a> and surrounds Stockholm, the national capital and seat of the l\u00e4n\u2019s governor, <a class=\"md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off eb\" data-term=\"yet\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/dictionary\/yet\" data-type=\"EB\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">yet<\/a> is administratively separate from that city. The l\u00e4n includes parts of the traditional landskap (provinces) of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Sodermanland\" class=\"md-crosslink autoxref \" data-show-preview=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">S\u00f6dermanland<\/a> (south) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Uppland\" class=\"md-crosslink autoxref \" data-show-preview=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Uppland<\/a> (north). Stockholm l\u00e4n is a fertile lowland dotted with many lakes, and off the deeply indented coastline are numerous skerries (islands). Iron is mined in the northeastern region. Industries include metalworking, papermaking, and the manufacture of machinery and electrical equipment. Area 2,621 square miles (6,789 square km). Pop.
