Concebida entre 2005 y 2006, es uno de los \u00faltimos proyectos del fallecido arquitecto en el pa\u00eds. El dise\u00f1o presenta una estructura con c\u00fapula de aproximadamente 60 metros de di\u00e1metro, suspendida por dos elementos imponentes que se elevan a 100 metros de altura. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oscarniemeyer.org.br\/obra\/pro603?utm_medium=website&amp;utm_source=archdaily.cl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Niemeyer se refiri\u00f3 al proyecto como una \u00abplaza,\u00bb<\/a> que consiste en una catedral con capacidad para 3,000 personas y un altar externo dise\u00f1ado para albergar hasta 20,000 fieles durante misas y eventos p\u00fablicos. La construcci\u00f3n comenz\u00f3 en 2013 y a\u00fan contin\u00faa. La propuesta arquitect\u00f3nica inicial, inspirada en la Bas\u00edlica de San Pedro en Roma, sigui\u00f3 la visi\u00f3n trazada por el urbanista Aar\u00e3o Reis al dise\u00f1ar Belo Horizonte. Sin embargo, el plan original para la Catedral Cristo Rei nunca se complet\u00f3 y se pospuso hasta 2004. Ese a\u00f1o, el cuarto arzobispo de la ciudad encarg\u00f3 un nuevo dise\u00f1o contempor\u00e1neo al arquitecto modernista <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archdaily.cl\/cl\/tag\/oscar-niemeyer\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Oscar Niemeyer<\/a>. El nuevo proyecto ten\u00eda como objetivo abordar el papel en evoluci\u00f3n de una catedral en el siglo XXI, como un espacio para la espiritualidad, la cultura, la educaci\u00f3n, el arte y la atenci\u00f3n social, as\u00ed como para la reflexi\u00f3n y el di\u00e1logo. Se eligi\u00f3 un nuevo sitio para marcar el centro geogr\u00e1fico y simb\u00f3lico del tejido urbano de Minas Gerais, a la vez el coraz\u00f3n de la Arquidi\u00f3cesis y la periferia de Belo Horizonte. El dise\u00f1o de Niemeyer prev\u00e9 una plaza abierta destinada no solo a ceremonias religiosas y oraciones, sino tambi\u00e9n a servicios de apoyo social, programas educativos y culturales, la preservaci\u00f3n del arte sacro y la evangelizaci\u00f3n a trav\u00e9s de medios. Seg\u00fan Clemence, el \u00e1rea representa una zona bulliciosa cerca de una autopista, ofreciendo una riqueza \u00fanica visible desde la c\u00fapula de la catedral. La iniciativa para esta nueva catedral comenz\u00f3 en 2004, seguida de una reuni\u00f3n entre el arzobispo y Niemeyer en 2005. El dise\u00f1o se complet\u00f3 en 2006, se present\u00f3 p\u00fablicamente en 2011 y la construcci\u00f3n comenz\u00f3 en 2013.
