Indra, a global leader in the port sector
The Spanish company Indra will be responsible for implementing the new digitalisation and automation systems at the Port of Bilbao, which will enable all information and data relating to freight transport, maritime logistics and the operations of the various stakeholders involved in the process to be integrated into the cloud.
In this way, the Port of Bilbao will adapt to the European Union’s new customs requirements, including the new Union Customs Code (UCC) and the European Maritime Single Window (EMSWe).
The technological solution provided by Indra guarantees cybersecurity and data protection, which are fundamental issues when it comes to the exchange of information between the Port Authority and national and EU authorities.
Real-time system
The new system implemented by Indra will enable the various stakeholders involved in port management – including shipping companies, customs staff, port terminals and hauliers, to access real-time information and interact under the European ‘single declaration’ principle, which will simplify administrative procedures and, consequently, reduce the transit time of goods.
Furthermore, all stakeholders in the port ecosystem – such as shipping companies, customs officials, terminals and hauliers – will be able to interact in real time under the European principle of the ‘single declaration’, which will help to reduce administrative burdens and goods transit times.
State-of-the-art technology
The Port of Bilbao is the most important port on the European Atlantic coast. In 2025, it handled a total of 32 million tonnes of goods, generated more than 58,000 jobs and contributed 8 per cent of the Basque Country’s GDP. It has connections with more than 900 ports worldwide.
The new port communication system (PCS) will enable the integration of all data sources, automating workflows and allowing the Port of Bilbao to achieve greater operational efficiency, increasing productivity, reducing transport costs and facilitating compliance with the decarbonisation plan for logistics chains along the Atlantic corridor.
