A new EU–Canada arrangement targets wildfire prediction, Arctic simulations and climate resilience using advanced digital modelling.

The European Commission and Environment and Climate Change Canada have signed an Administrative Arrangement to strengthen cooperation on AI-enabled climate modelling through Destination Earth (DestinE), the EU initiative developing a digital twin of the planet. Signed on 30 October during the EU–Canada Summit in Montreal, the arrangement builds on the EU–Canada Digital Partnership launched in December 2025 and aims to improve climate risk assessment, disaster preparedness and adaptation planning.

The cooperation will focus on three priorities: developing AI algorithms to improve predictions of wildfire ignition and spread; strengthening simulations of Arctic climate dynamics, including sea ice decline, permafrost thaw and atmospheric changes; and supporting high-resolution climate forecasting and risk modelling in vulnerable regions, including the Caribbean.

By combining European modelling capabilities with Canadian environmental data and scientific expertise, the partners aim to turn complex Earth-system information into practical tools for civil protection authorities, regional planners and policymakers. The arrangement establishes areas for joint operational cooperation, although the announcement does not specify new funding commitments, implementation deadlines or measurable targets.

Why does it matter?

The agreement highlights the growing role of AI, supercomputing and digital twins in climate adaptation and disaster risk management. By strengthening international cooperation on environmental data and predictive modelling, the EU and Canada aim to improve the ability of public authorities to anticipate climate-related threats and plan responses. The initiative also illustrates how advanced digital infrastructure can support climate resilience, particularly in regions facing increasing wildfire risks and rapid environmental change.
