US allies in Europe expect that President Donald Trump will withdraw a larger number of American troops from the continent after the announcement of plans to cut 5,000 service members in Germany, Bloomberg reports citing sources close to the situation.
According to Bloomberg, diplomats from NATO member states foresee further reductions in the contingent and even changes to the deployment of long-range missiles in Germany, a move that was decided during the Biden administration; the sources ask not to be named.
Among other possible scenarios are a halt to US participation in some military exercises and the redeployment of units from countries that do not satisfy the American administration to countries considered more loyal to Trump.
It is also noted that this concept has roots in Trump’s first term, when the possibility of sending more troops to Poland was discussed.
The sources emphasize that their projections of troop withdrawals are based on Trump’s public remarks and discussions among allies and American colleagues about NATO’s future. Pentagon officials decline to comment on this issue.
