The owners of the new Coffee Wave shop are bringing European flavor to Poway.
Sergey Kholkin and his wife, Olga Trusova, moved to the United States from Russia a dozen years ago and have since fulfilled their dream to open their own businesses.
“We traveled all over the world, but the most beautiful place was San Diego so we decided to move here,” Kholkin said.
Kholkin started a commercial and residential moving and storage business, Happy Home Moo-vers, in Scripps Ranch more than a decade ago.
Profits from that business helped Trusova open her business, Coffee Wave, in January 2026. The refurbished shop at 13538 Poway Road, Suite B took about a year to convert from a blank commercial slate into a quaint and cozy coffee retreat, the couple said.

Their European background gives them an advantage over other local coffee shops, they added.
“We tried to make something a little different,” Kholkin said. “Ours is more European and high quality. We have way more menu options and drinks than the other coffee shops.”
The selection includes 40 different coffee flavors. New drinks are added to the menu every two weeks.
In addition to Americanos, cappuccinos, mochas, lattes and espressos, Coffee Wave sells affagatos, cortados and a variety of matcha drinks. Along with regular hot chocolate, the business offers Belgian and Mexican chocolate drinks.
Other drinks include horchata, dragon fruit, lemonade and protein iced drinks.
Food options include pastries and muffins, sourdough bread, empanadas and salmon toast and avocado toast.

The couple said they would eventually like to roast their own coffee but for now rely on an another source for their beans. They also have long-term plans to expand on their Coffee Wave shop and their mobile coffee truck that has the flexibility to be parked at special events, street fairs, business and school functions and at beaches and ballparks.
For now they’re making the most of local activities by participating in Christmas in the Park, the Poway Fall Festival, and organizing meet-ups for car buffs and offering live music every Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon.
