And European consumers have a right to be told by app developers where to sign up to the best offers, even when the app store owner does not get a cut,\u201d Teresa Ribera, the European Commission\u2019s Executive Vice President for Clean, Just and Competitive Transition, said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">Kent Walker, Google\u2019s President of Global Affairs, said of the penalty, \u201cproduct degradation driven by a small group of self-serving complainants\u201d will be a negative impact for business and consumers in Europe, the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/google-eu-competition-fine-antitrust-play-search-199c77e09d3829ebfc3d9e51281a369a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/google-eu-competition-fine-antitrust-play-search-199c77e09d3829ebfc3d9e51281a369a\">AP<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">He claims the EU\u2019s Digital Markets Act requires the company \u201cto strip away real-time search features Europeans love \u2014 like instant pricing and direct availability for hotels, flights, and restaurants \u2014 and dismantle safety protections on Google Play.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">Google has 60 days to comply with the decision, including boosting rivals\u2019 online presence. If it fails to do so, additional penalties can be levied, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/07\/23\/business\/google-eu-fine-search-competition.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/07\/23\/business\/google-eu-fine-search-competition.html\">Times<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">This is not the first time the EU has fined the company over its business practices. Google recently lost an appeal of a $4.5 billion antitrust fine for throttling competition and reducing people\u2019s choice because of its dominance of the Android system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">The EU calls the seven leading tech companies such as Apple, Amazon, Alphabet, Meta, Microsoft and ByteDance \u201cgatekeepers\u201d that control access for consumers, the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/google-eu-competition-fine-antitrust-play-search-199c77e09d3829ebfc3d9e51281a369a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/google-eu-competition-fine-antitrust-play-search-199c77e09d3829ebfc3d9e51281a369a\">AP<\/a> said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">\u201cIn the EU, businesses have the right to compete fairly.
