AMSTERDAM, July 23 (Reuters) – France opposes the use of Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) driver assistance software on roads in \u200cthe European Union in its current form over safety \u200cconcerns, its transportation minister said.<\/p>\n
The French stance on the FSD software is the \u200bfirst public rejection by an EU government of a Dutch-led initiative to approve the technology for use throughout Europe.<\/p>\n
In a video statement released on Wednesday, Philippe Tabarot pointed to worries over speeding \u200cand driver inattention.<\/p>\n
“In France, \u2060we believe that, while this system brings a number of technological advances, the safety tradeoffs are \u2060not yet sufficient to justify authorisation in its current form,” he said.<\/p>\n
Tesla’s FSD is a driver assistance system that can accelerate, \u200bbrake, and \u200bsteer a car, while its \u200bhuman driver remains ready to \u200cintervene.<\/p>\n
The Netherlands’ road authority RDW approved the technology for use on Dutch roads on a provisional basis in April, prompting Belgium, Denmark, Estonia and Lithuania to do the same in advance of a possible bloc-wide vote on the plan this fall.<\/p>\n
The \u200cRDW could not immediately be reached \u200bfor comment on Thursday.<\/p>\n
FSD software is \u200bseen as a selling \u200bpoint and revenue-generator for Tesla, whose European registrations \u200care gradually recovering following a slump \u200blast year.<\/p>\n
Responding to \u200bTabarot’s remarks in a statement on X, Tesla CEO Elon Musk wrote that “delaying the approval of FSD in France \u200bwill cost lives”.<\/p>\n
Tabarot \u200csaid France is continuing technical discussions with the Netherlands \u200band other EU countries over the technology.<\/p>\n
