American manufacturers argue that the change would violate the terms of the trade deal between the U.S. and the EU.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0 charcoal-color\">According to a report by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/3eb796fd-bcdb-4a9f-89b7-f7d5e692a3cd?syn-25a6b1a6=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Financial Times;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;Financial Times&quot;}\" class=\"link \">Financial Times<\/a>, the EU and U.S. agreed on a trade deal in 2025, where President Donald Trump revised European import tariffs from 27.5% to 15%. He said:<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0 charcoal-color\">\u201cWe would hope . . . issues like the IVA will be resolved in the spirit and consistent with the terms of that agreement. You can\u2019t have low tariffs and massive non-tariff trade barriers and claim you\u2019ve got a functioning relationship.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0 charcoal-color\">An executive from a carmaker in Detroit said that the EU was in a better position in the trade deal:<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0 charcoal-color\">\u201cRight now Europe is in a better position than the US.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0 charcoal-color\">He added:<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0 charcoal-color\">\u201cThe US administration is aware that not only is Europe dragging its feet on the trade agreement, but they\u2019re also looking at restricting US products and limiting customer choice in Europe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0 charcoal-color\">The European Commission is expected to close loopholes in the IVA scheme in 2027, which currently allow \u201cunsafe cars\u201d on European roads.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0 charcoal-color\">To counter the Commission\u2019s move, Howard Lutnick of the American Automotive Policy Council, the lobby group for Ford, Chevrolet-owner General Motors, and Stellantis, wrote a letter to the commerce secretary, urging the Trump administration to prevent the EU from amending the IVA scheme in 2027.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0 charcoal-color\">However, the EU\u2019s Transport &amp; Environment group is pushing against the import of American pickup trucks, as they reportedly pose a higher risk for cyclists, pedestrians, and other vehicles on the road.
