This comes in the wake of last week’s heat, which broke temperature records across countries such as Austria and Poland.<\/p>\n (MORE: Danube River water levels cause shipping, power problems<\/a>)<\/p>\n As the heat shifts east, western Europe will see some relief heading into the weekend, but it is still uncertain exactly when and how much these temperatures cool off.<\/p>\n What will the rest of August feel like?<\/p>\n Unfortunately, heat will be the name of the game throughout the rest of August, as shown in the monthly outlook from AG2 and The Weather Company.<\/p>\n Almost the entirety of the continent is covered in red and purple, indicating the most above-average temperatures. <\/p>\n (MORE: Europe is baking. Here’s how to stay cool off under a blazing heat dome<\/a>)<\/p>\n If you were considering a last-minute getaway to Europe before summer slips away, you may just want to wait. <\/p>\n Choosing to travel in late September or October, also known as fall “shoulder season<\/a>,” helps you avoid the dangerous heat as well as the bulk of the tourists.<\/p>\n (AG2\/The Weather Company)<\/p>\n Europe’s sweltering summer<\/p>\n This summer has been hot, sweaty and deadly across Europe, with thousands of deaths<\/a> recorded this summer already. <\/p>\n The heat wave in late June<\/a> was historic in nature \u2014 smashing records in France, Spain and the UK for the hottest June day. <\/p>\n And that was just one in a long line of heat waves we’ve seen over the past few months.<\/p>\n (MORE: Europe is putting explosives in riverbeds to combat historic drought<\/a>)<\/p>\n So, why are they happening so frequently? Climate change.<\/p>\n Europe is the fastest warming continent<\/a>. These man-made changes to our climate mean the summer here will continue to be defined by persistent heat domes, which trigger extreme drought, low water levels and catastrophic wildfires. <\/p>\n This continent doesn’t really have the equipment to handle this extreme heat and it’s going to be brutal for travelers in the decades to come.<\/p>\n Women use electric fans to cool off during a heatwave in Paris on July 10, 2026.<\/p>\n (Behrouz MEHRI \/ AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n Did the Mediterranean Sea just set an all-time record?<\/p>\n On Wednesday, a buoy in the western Mediterranean Sea west of the Spanish island of Mallorca recorded a water temperature of 91.4 degrees Fahrenheit. <\/p>\n If that preliminary data is found to be correct, that may be the hottest Mediterranean water temperature on record. <\/p>\n The hottest known water temperatures in the Mediterranean Sea appear to have been 89.5 degrees off the Egyptian coast on Aug. 15, 2024, and 88.4 degrees at that same Dragonera buoy west of Mallorca in August 2022. <\/p>\n Regardless, given the persistent heat since May, water temperatures in the Mediterranean Sea are over 7 degrees Fahrenheit above average in some areas, near record warm for this time of year<\/a> in data since 1982. <\/p>\n Some parts of the sea are as warm or warmer than the Gulf of Mexico and western Caribbean Sea<\/a>. <\/p>\n This off the charts warm water is important because it helps keep the air hot and humid near the coast, including at night. <\/p>\n![\"\"](\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/europe\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/google-preferred-source-badge-en.083veuzl7n_jk.png\"\/){kind=icon}
