{"id":116115,"date":"2026-08-14T17:11:29","date_gmt":"2026-08-14T17:11:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/europe\/116115\/"},"modified":"2026-08-14T17:11:29","modified_gmt":"2026-08-14T17:11:29","slug":"danish-pm-says-foreigners-with-islamic-background-are-greatest-threat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/europe\/116115\/","title":{"rendered":"Danish PM says foreigners with &#8216;Islamic background&#8217; are greatest threat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>European leaders of all stripes are tense at the prospect of a second <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/world\/4670529\/what-to-know-ceuta-spanish-port-thousands-moroccan-migrants-swarming\/\">invasion into Ceuta<\/a> as <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/morocco\/\" data-type=\"post_tag\" data-id=\"3361\">Morocco<\/a> tightens security amid online campaigns to rally another mob across the border.<\/p>\n<p>Social media posts calling for Moroccan citizens to launch another<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/world\/4669081\/migrants-bullrush-spanish-border-humanitarian-social-emergency\/\"> mass invasion of the Spanish territory<\/a> are percolating across the internet. Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles warns that the border remains closed and any such attempts will be repelled. But that assurance has done little to assuage panic in the European Union that Spain will be the entry point for a flood of migrants.<\/p>\n<p>Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, a center-left politician who rose to power with a platform decrying mass immigration, told her parliament that Europe is facing an existential threat from \u201cpeople who sympathize with some of the darkest forces in this world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf we talk about undemocratic forces, yes, then Russia is our biggest enemy. The problem is that a major enemy has started to grow from within, and it is foreigners who have come to Europe,\u201d Frederiksen <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/brusselssignal.eu\/2026\/08\/danish-pm-warns-of-enemy-within-as-she-links-migration-to-hamas-and-terrorism\/\">said<\/a>. \u201cIt is Hamas supporters. It is people who commit terror against European societies. Unfortunately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last month, approximately 72,000 Moroccan migrants <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/world\/4670675\/trump-migrant-surge-ceuta-democrats\/\">stormed through borders<\/a> and swam across bodies of water to enter Ceuta, which is a part of Spain located on the northern tip of Africa. These invaders were reportedly inspired by social media rumors that the border between Morocco and Spain was open.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spain claims 70,000 of these illegal entrants have returned home or been detained and deported. The vivid chaos is bringing unpleasant attention to Spain\u2019s broader relationship with immigration and sparking fear that the southern European state cannot be trusted by the rest of the European Union on the issue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The European Commission has <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/my-europe\/2026\/08\/13\/eu-experts-on-the-ground-in-ceuta-amid-fears-of-fresh-migrant-influx\">deployed a team of migration experts<\/a> to the Spanish territory to conduct a \u201cfirst-hand assessment\u201d of border security and \u201cunderstand the first-hand needs on the ground.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor us, it\u2019s not about a specific date. It\u2019s about reinforcing our borders and ensuring returns every day of the year,\u201d a European Commission spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last week, Italy imposed border checks with Spain to ensure undocumented individuals could not enter. Outraged by this policy, Spain vaguely threatened retaliation, but Rome was unbothered.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cItaly does not accept ultimatums or demands from abroad regarding national security and border control,\u201d Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni\u2019s office <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/italy-rejects-spain-border-control-ultimatum-ceuta-migrants\/\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Multiple European leaders, including Frederiksen and Meloni, called for Spain to be suspended from the Schengen Area earlier this month until its migration system can be normalized and secured. Finnish Interior Minister Mari Rantanen made such a demand, saying Spain \u201ccompletely failed\u201d to protect the EU\u2019s borders. (AP Photo\/Bernat Armangue)<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/spain\/\">Spanish<\/a>\u00a0Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, an avowed\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/socialists\/\">socialist<\/a>\u00a0who has\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/02\/04\/opinion\/spain-migrants-europe.html\">penned op-eds<\/a>\u00a0in U.S. publications about how the \u201cWest needs migrants,\u201d has condemned the critical responses from his fellow EU member states. He called the idea of penalizing Spain over the invasion \u201cselfish, polarising and unlawful\u201d at a time when the nation most needs help.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Spain\u2019s handling of illegal immigration, among the most important issues for voters across Europe, was already causing concern before the Ceuta crisis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sanchez\u2019s government in June rolled out a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/atlasinstitute.org\/what-spains-migrant-amnesty-means-for-national-elections\/\">mass amnesty program<\/a> for foreign nationals illegally living and working in Spain. The program offered an avenue for illegal immigrants to obtain legal residency status and work permits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/op-eds\/4673524\/morocco-spain-ceuta-border-crisis\/\">THE REVERSE RECONQUISTA: HOW 60,000 MOROCCAN MEN EXPOSED EUROPE\u2019S SOFTEST BORDER<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The program grants a one-year residence permit to illegal migrants who have been living in Spain for at least five months before the end of 2025. Applicants were also required to have a clean criminal record.
