Berlin-headquartered<\/a> Senken has signed a multi-year carbon removal agreement with locally based<\/a> company Carbonsate in what stands out as Europe\u2019s largest biomass storage deal to date.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The agreement covers 50,000 tonnes of permanent carbon dioxide removal (CDR) to be delivered via Carbonsate\u2019s Puro.earth<\/a>-verified biomass geological storage project in Namibia through 2028.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Carbonsate\u2019s project, focused on clearing encroacher bush in the savanna around Otjiwarongo, Namibia, has been screened against Senken\u2019s 600+ data-point Sustainability Integrity Index.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Credits from this agreement will go to Senken\u2019s corporate partners, who have near-term demand for permanent CDR.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Senken CEO Adrian Wons shared, \u201cDemand for permanent carbon removal is already outrunning supply: corporate net-zero targets all point to the same small pool of verified capacity. That gap will define the market for the next decade. We committed for multiple years to secure access for European buyers to credible removal at prices they can plan with.\u201d<\/p>\n

For Senken, this deal is the third multi-year CDR supply commitment secured in 2026. Earlier this year, the company also announced an offtake for the aviation industry which included removals generated through direct air capture (DAC), industrial biochar and regenerative agriculture.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Its purchase from Carbonsate represents the second-largest buyer commitment in the biomass burial in geological storage category globally and the largest one for a project operating in Africa.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Carbonsate is removing CO2 through biomass storage<\/p>\n

Carbonsate stores waste wood that would otherwise be burnt or left to decompose into engineered underground chambers, where the CO2 gets locked away from the atmosphere for centuries.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In the next few years, the developer is confident that this initiative can scale beyond 100,000 tonnes \u2013 a forecast that piques the interest of Senken and its corporate buyers. With this scenario at hand, both Carbonsate and Senken intend to expand the agreement as that capacity comes online.<\/p>\n

Commenting on the deal, Johanna Broell, co-founder and CEO at Carbonsate, stated, \u201cLong-term commitments like this one give project developers the certainty to build ahead of demand. This agreement supports the expansion of our Namibia storage sites and brings meaningful new supply of verified, high-integrity carbon removal to the market.\u201d<\/p>\n
