Long-standing worries about <a ref=\"dofollow\" data-ga-onclick=\"Inarticle articleshow link click#Markets#href\" href=\"https:\/\/m.economictimes.com\/topic\/fiscal-stability\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">fiscal stability<\/a> in countries such as France, Japan, the UK and the \u200cUnited States also \u2060weighed \u2060on global bonds, even as recent soft U.S. data prompted markets to trim their expectations for rate hikes from the Federal Reserve.<\/p>\n<p>Germany&#8217;s 10-year yield, \u200bthe benchmark for the euro zone, was last up 4 basis points at 3.255%, its highest level since May 2011. Bond \u200byields move inversely with prices.<\/p>\n<p>Similar moves were seen in France, and the other more-indebted countries of the euro zone like Spain and Italy, where yields rose even more.<a class=\"linkCtaMainHead\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/markets\/bonds\/bond-markets-from-us-to-japan-whacked-as-inflation-and-fiscal-worries-take-hold\/articleshow\/133321775.cms\" data-ga-onclick=\"Bonds JIRAAF#Click 133321775#Articles\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Bond markets from US to Japan whacked as inflation and fiscal worries take hold<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Global borrowing costs are hitting multi-decade highs again as inflation fears rise. The United States has seen its 30-year Treasury yields surpassing five percent, while Japan&#8217;s 10-year borrowing costs approach a peak not seen in nearly 30 years. Additionally, long-term yields in Europe have reached some of their highest levels in years, creating ripple effects in economies and financial markets around the globe.<\/p>\n<p>France&#8217;s 10-year bond yield rose to 4.118%, its highest since November 2008, \u200bpushing the spread between German and French 10-year yields to 86 bps, \u2060its widest since \u200cOctober 2025.<br \/>LONG-END WORRIES Fears that a prolonged Iran war could lead governments to ramp up \u200bspending to cushion \u200bthe economic impact of energy supply disruptions from the Middle East have again reignited concerns about \u2060fiscal stability. The deteriorating geopolitical backdrop is also expected to drive higher \u200bmilitary expenditure, while volatile weather in Europe is adding to the strain on \u200bpublic finances.<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"ET logo\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/europe\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/118783427.cms.png\" width=\"90%\"\/>Live Events<br \/>Concerns over the fiscal outlook tend to weigh more heavily on longer-dated bonds, where prices are more sensitive to shifts in government borrowing and debt sustainability expectations.<br \/>&#8220;Markets are clearly demanding more compensation for locking up capital for very long periods,&#8221; said Kjersti Haugland, chief economist at DNB Carnegie.&#8221;Future financing needs, and therefore also the supply of government bonds, are substantial, reflecting ageing, rearmament and a greater need for supply security in a world marked by rising geopolitical \u200cconflict and unrest.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Germany&#8217;s 30-year yield rose 2 bps to 3.7663%, its highest since July 2011.<\/p>\n<p>Other heavily indebted countries, such as Japan and the U.S., were seeing similar moves.
