AI spoke volumes about the strategic and technological dilemmas facing the European Union, as the bloc prepares to navigate an autumn period full of geopolitical and <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/china\/diplomacy\/article\/3362502\/eu-china-trade-war-beijing-turns-screws-brussels-tests-limits-restraint?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">trade upheaval.<\/a>In a bid to roll out \u201cEuropean infrastructure for sovereign AI\u201d, Mistral \u2013 Europe\u2019s great hope in the global <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/artificial-intelligence?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">artificial intelligence<\/a> race \u2013 said it would begin offering other companies\u2019 models, while keeping the service itself under European control.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Mistral\u2019s model of choice is GLM-5.2, an open-weight large language model developed by Zhipu, also known as Z.ai, one of China\u2019s six \u201cAI tiger\u201d companies, included since 2025 on the US\u2019 entity list because of national security concerns regarding military modernisation.<\/p>\n<p>The decision to plug a Chinese AI brain into what would effectively be a European shell has raised eyebrows given the shoddy state of <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/china-eu-relations?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">EU-China relations<\/a>, but on practical terms it makes some sense.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Despite a deluge of political chatter about creating a sovereign European AI offering, the bloc has lagged both the US and China in investment and innovation.<\/p>\n<p>EU leaders debate new China trade policy over \u2018systemic threat\u2019<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Geoeconomics expert Shahin Vallee from the German Council on Foreign Relations said that a pivot to \u201cAI adoption rather than innovation\u201d therefore represented \u201cthe right
