{"id":129708,"date":"2026-09-03T12:12:46","date_gmt":"2026-09-03T12:12:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/europe\/129708\/"},"modified":"2026-09-03T12:12:46","modified_gmt":"2026-09-03T12:12:46","slug":"meta-child-safety-europe-new-legislative-push","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/europe\/129708\/","title":{"rendered":"Meta Child Safety Europe: New Legislative Push"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>European lawmakers have called on the European Commission to force Meta to implement the same child safety measures on its platforms in Europe that the tech giant recently agreed to introduce in parts of the United States.<\/p>\n<p>A letter signed by 52 members of the European Parliament (MEPs) and seen by AFP on Thursday urges Brussels to act swiftly in concluding its investigation into Meta\u2019s practices under the Digital Services Act.<\/p>\n<p>French MEP Stephanie Yon-Courtin led the cross-party initiative, which argues that European children deserve the same level of protection as their American counterparts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEuropean children are worth no less than American ones,\u201d the letter states. \u201cIt would therefore be untenable for European minors to end up less well protected, when our framework is the most demanding in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Landmark US settlement<\/p>\n<p>Meta agreed last month to pay a coalition of US states as much as $16.7 billion and implement significant restrictions on how teenagers use Facebook and Instagram. The settlement includes features such as automatic night-time blocks for young users.<\/p>\n<p>The 27-nation European Union has been pushing for similar changes. In July, Brussels told Meta to alter what it called the \u201caddictive design\u201d of its platforms, findings that the company disputed at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Calls for swift action<\/p>\n<p>The MEPs are now demanding that the European Commission conclude its probe \u201cwithout further delay\u201d and issue a \u201cnon-compliance decision\u201d with appropriate penalties.<\/p>\n<p>The letter, addressed to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, warns that any commitments accepted from Meta \u201cmust on no account fall short of what Meta has just granted to American users\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The lawmakers also suggest that if other enforcement measures fail, the EU should be prepared to ask courts to temporarily block access to platforms where serious harm persists.<\/p>\n<p>ALSO READ: <a href=\"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/meta-faces-200-billion-lawsuit-over-child-addiction-claims\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/meta-faces-200-billion-lawsuit-over-child-addiction-claims\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Meta faces $200 billion lawsuit over child addiction claims<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Beyond fines<\/p>\n<p>The parliamentarians argue that fines alone may not be sufficient to change behaviour, as they can simply be \u201cwritten off\u201d by tech giants.
