\n\tDockworkers at Europe<\/a>\u2019s busiest port went on strike<\/a> Friday, capping off a string of labor actions slowing down container movement at the continent\u2019s northern seaports this week.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe simultaneous disruptions are putting pressure on often-backlogged Northern European supply chains at a time when port congestion<\/a> and vessel delays are already challenging global cargo flows.<\/p>\n

\n\tAt the Port of Rotterdam<\/a>, hundreds of union port workers walked off the job at 11:15 a.m. local time, with employees at other gateways in the Netherlands including Amsterdam and Zeeland also taking part.<\/p>\n

\n\tNo ships will be handled through 7 p.m., meaning that loading, unloading, mooring, towing and cargo inspection could face significant delays, according to FNV Havens, the labor group conducting the national strike<\/a>. Tugboat workers also joined the action, potentially affecting vessel movements within the ports<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe strike follows a separate 48-hour labor action at multiple German ports<\/a> that began Wednesday night. The walkout took place across six ports in Hamburg, Bremen, Bremerhaven, Wilhelmshaven, Emden and Brake, with the timing varying by location.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe work stoppage forced the Germany gateways to suspend container terminal operations. Container deliveries and pickups are not possible while the strike is in effect.<\/p>\n

\n\tAcross the Netherlands-based ports, FNV Havens union went on strike over the government\u2019s proposed 6.5-billion-euro ($7.6 billion) cuts to social safety benefits. These benefits protect income for workers who lose their jobs or become unable to work. One of the proposed cuts would scale back the maximum duration of unemployment insurance benefits from two years to one year.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cOur port is changing at a rapid pace. Jobs and tasks are disappearing because of automation and the rapid rise of AI,\u201d said FNV union leader Niek Stam in a video posted Monday. \u201cWe cannot stop technological progress, but we can demand that workers don\u2019t pay the price. Precisely when work becomes more uncertain, you need to be able to rely on a strong social safety net.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe stoppage is causing longer vessel and truck waiting times, according to the Port of Rotterdam Authority. One major container terminal, ECT, warned that it could take days to clear the resulting backlog.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe disruption is not uniform across every terminal, however. Terminal-specific operating windows vary, meaning the effect on individual vessels, trucks and rail services will depend on where cargo is moving and when.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe expect extra congestion in the hours before the strike and after work resumes,\u201d said Netherlands-based third-party logistics (3PL) provider Van der Helm Logistics. \u201cCarriers will attempt to pick up or deliver containers earlier, while simultaneously clearing backlogs after the strike ends.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe strike at the Netherlands\u2019 ports is part of a series of actions by unions in the country in its protest of the potential benefits changes. On Sept. 9, most trains will not run due to a nationwide public transportation strike.<\/p>\n

\n\tMeanwhile, in Germany, dockworkers of the Ver.di trade union committed to a nationwide stoppage after a breakdown in negotiations with the Central Association of German Seaport Operators (ZDS) over wages.<\/p>\n

\n\tVer.di is seeking an 8.2 percent pay raise over 12 months, with a minimum increase of 2.50 euros per hour. The employers have offered a 5.1 percent increase over an 18-month period, with a minimum increase of 1.20 euros per hour. More than 6,000 port workers took part in a union consultation on the latest offer from ZDS, with a large majority rejecting it.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe strike has hit container operations particularly hard in Hamburg because due to participation from workers directly responsible for vessel and container handling. During an earlier 24-hour strike in August, roughly 90 percent of container terminal employees walked off the job, causing container handling to slow substantially or stop altogether.<\/p>\n

\n\tWorkers at the Altenwerder, Burchardkai, Eurogate and Tollerort container terminals are participating in the action. Few larger vessels were expected to be handled during the strike.<\/p>\n

\n\tGerman news outlet NDR reported Friday morning that webcam footage showed many of Burchardkai\u2019s container cranes standing idle, while few larger vessels were expected to be handled.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe disruption has also spread inland. Eurogate\u2019s rail schedule showed numerous Friday rail slots blocked because of the strike, with the terminal citing service cancellations and port closure. No additional rail volumes were being accepted Thursday, while Friday capacity was listed as very high.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe German and Dutch strikes are not related, but their timing creates an awkward handoff for Northern European shipping networks<\/a>.
