{"id":1635,"date":"2026-03-31T07:29:07","date_gmt":"2026-03-31T07:29:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/europe\/1635\/"},"modified":"2026-03-31T07:29:07","modified_gmt":"2026-03-31T07:29:07","slug":"nebius-furthers-european-expansion-with-10-billion-ai-data-centre-in-finland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/europe\/1635\/","title":{"rendered":"Nebius furthers European expansion with $10 billion AI data centre in Finland"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">By Anne Kauranen and Toby Sterling<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">HELSINKI, March 31 (Reuters) &#8211; AI infrastructure firm Nebius Group on Tuesday said it was continuing its rapid European \u200cexpansion with a 310-megawatt data centre in Finland, which would be one \u200cof the continent&#8217;s largest with an estimated value of more than $10 billion as demand for AI computing \u200bgrows.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">The Amsterdam-based company said capacity at its 10th site, which Finnish developer Polarnode is already building in Lappeenranta near Finland&#8217;s eastern border with Russia, is due to come online in phases from 2027.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">Nebius has recently won supply contracts worth more than $40 billion \u200cin total with U.S. software \u2060giants <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/organizations\/microsoft\/\" data-ylk=\"slk:Microsoft;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;Microsoft&quot;}\" class=\"link \" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Microsoft<\/a> and Meta. It said the new site would be used to train AI models and run AI applications, and \u2060would not be tied to any one client.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">The data centre is one of Finland&#8217;s largest infrastructure projects to date, Polarnode CEO Mikko Toivanen said in a statement, adding \u200bthat it \u200bwould support European data sovereignty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">LOWER COOLING COSTS<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">Finland \u200bis considered an attractive location for \u200cdata centres because its low energy prices, renewable electricity supply and cold climate reduce cooling costs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">Lappeenranta ticked all the boxes, such as quick land availability and grid capacity, Nebius found.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">&#8220;We think that the broader ecosystem environment is also very favourable here,&#8221; Chief Communications Officer Tom Blackwell told Reuters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">The Lappeenranta facility would be Nebius&#8217; largest outside \u200cthe United States, surpassing the 240 MW project \u200bit announced near Lille, France, in February.
