Finland \u200bis considered an attractive location for \u200cdata centres because its low energy prices, renewable electricity supply and cold climate reduce cooling costs.<\/p>\n
Lappeenranta ticked all the boxes, such as quick land availability and grid capacity, Nebius found.<\/p>\n
“We think that the broader ecosystem environment is also very favourable here,” Chief Communications Officer Tom Blackwell told Reuters.<\/p>\n
The Lappeenranta facility would be Nebius’ largest outside \u200cthe United States, surpassing the 240 MW project \u200bit announced near Lille, France, in February. Its \u200blargest operational European facility is \u200balso in Finland, a 75 MW site in Mantsala.<\/p>\n
Lappeenranta will make \u200ca “significant contribution” to achieving Nebius’ capacity \u200bgoals, which include securing \u200bmore than 3 gigawatts of contracted capacity by the end of this year, Nebius CEO Arkady Volozh said in a statement.<\/p>\n
The site will use enough \u200belectricity to power up \u200cto half a million Finnish households and eventually cover roughly 10% of \u200bNebius’ contracted capacity.<\/p>\n
