{"id":17432,"date":"2026-04-19T22:53:13","date_gmt":"2026-04-19T22:53:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/europe\/17432\/"},"modified":"2026-04-19T22:53:13","modified_gmt":"2026-04-19T22:53:13","slug":"ev-sales-soar-in-european-markets-as-drivers-swerve-pricey-petrol","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/europe\/17432\/","title":{"rendered":"EV sales soar in European markets as drivers swerve pricey petrol"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a style=\"display:block\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/resizer\/v2\/FRFNOSR7DNDEJL5QG2LEY5LJZ4.jpg?auth=51b82d782bc7fae93630816556d110e33769c3bef11181000766f8277b8358ec&amp;width=600&amp;height=400&amp;quality=80&amp;smart=true\" aria-haspopup=\"true\" data-photo-viewer-index=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Open this photo in gallery:<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"figcap-text\">A charging station for electric cars at a shopping mall in Bochum, Germany in October, 2025.INA FASSBENDER\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Sales of fully electric cars in Europe\u2019s main auto markets jumped by almost a third in the first quarter of 2026, as drivers looked for alternatives to combustion engines after the war in Iran caused the highest spike in petrol prices in years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">New battery-electric vehicle (BEV) registrations, a proxy for sales, rose 29.4 per cent from a year ago to almost 560,000 in the quarter and were up 51.3 per cent at over 240,000 in March alone in 15 European markets, data collected by trade association E-Mobility Europe and research firm New Automotive showed on Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Last year, those markets accounted for 94 per cent of all BEV sales in the European Union and the European Free Trade Association, whose countries align with EU laws regulating CO2 emissions, data by the ACEA auto lobby shows.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cMarch\u2019s surge in electric car sales is one of Europe\u2019s biggest recent gains in energy security, in a month when oil dependence has become a real vulnerability,\u201d E-Mobility Europe Secretary General Chris Heron said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text mv-16 l-inset text-pb-8\" data-sophi-feature=\"interstitial\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/drive\/mobility\/article-as-ev-sales-stumble-in-canada-the-global-trend-is-much-different\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">As EV sales stumble in Canada, the global trend is much different<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The joint statement from the two organizations said the half-million BEVs registered in the quarter were enough to reduce oil consumption by two million barrels per year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The region\u2019s five largest EV markets \u2013 Germany, France, Spain, Italy and Poland \u2013 have recorded growth of more than 40 per cent in BEV sales so far this year, it said.
