After the meeting<\/a>, which he called \u201chighly constructive\u201d in a post on X<\/a>, Magyar struck a confident tone. \u201cEU funds will soon start arriving in Hungary,\u201d he said, while stressing the bloc was not imposing conditions \u201ccontrary to Hungary\u2019s national interests.\u201d<\/p>\n

Von der Leyen echoed the message in an X post<\/a> of her own: \u201cA very good exchange with P\u00e9ter Magyar in Brussels today. We discussed the steps necessary to unlock EU funds earmarked for Hungary that are frozen due to corruption and rule-of-law concerns. The European Commission will support your work to address these issues and realign with shared European values. Our teams will continue to work closely together.\u201d<\/p>\n

At stake is a large slice of Hungary\u2019s recovery fund \u2014 including roughly \u20ac10 billion<\/a> that will expire if Budapest fails to meet EU conditions by the end of August. To access the money, Hungary must deliver<\/a> on 27 so-called \u201csuper milestones\u201d covering public procurement, judicial independence, academic freedom and anti-corruption safeguards.<\/p>\n

Magyar has made clear where he sees the problem. The funds were blocked, he said<\/a>, because of \u201ccorruption on an industrial scale\u201d under Orb\u00e1n.<\/p>\n
