{"id":30574,"date":"2026-05-04T12:01:09","date_gmt":"2026-05-04T12:01:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/europe\/30574\/"},"modified":"2026-05-04T12:01:09","modified_gmt":"2026-05-04T12:01:09","slug":"a-european-lawmaker-is-sentenced-in-a-fraud-case-involving-czech-populist-leader-andrej-babis-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/europe\/30574\/","title":{"rendered":"A European lawmaker is sentenced in a fraud case involving Czech populist leader Andrej Babi\u0161"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>PRAGUE (AP) \u2014 A Czech court on Monday convicted a former associate of populist Prime Minister Andrej Babi\u0161 of fraud and handed her a three-year suspended sentence and a fine.<\/p>\n<p>Babi\u0161 was also a defendant alongside Jana Nagyov\u00e1 in the $2 million fraud case involving European Union subsidies but could not be sentenced because lawmakers in the lower house of Parliament rejected in March a motion to lift his immunity from prosecution.<\/p>\n<p>The populist billionaire began his third term as prime minister in December. He has said that the case was \u201cclearly politically motivated.\u201d The rejection of the motion means that he can only stand trial after his term ends in 2029.<\/p>\n<p>Nagyov\u00e1 is currently a member of the European Parliament, which has lifted her immunity. Prague\u2019s Municipal Court also fined her 500,000 koruna, or crowns ($24,000).<\/p>\n<p>The verdict is not final and she can appeal.<\/p>\n<p>The case centered around a farm known as the Stork\u2019s Nest, which received EU subsidies after its ownership was transferred from the Babi\u0161-owned Agrofert conglomerate to his family members. Later, Agrofert again took ownership of the farm.<\/p>\n<p>The subsidies were meant for small- and medium-sized enterprises, meaning that Agrofert wouldn\u2019t have been eligible.
