The European Union has a trade deal with the United States that is going through the \u200bdemocratic process, and the EU is willing to stick \u200cto it in good faith and, hopefully, the United States is too, French Finance Minister Roland Lescure said on Monday.<\/p>\n
Lescure was responding \u200bto a question on US President Donald Trump\u2019s announcement \u200blast Friday that he would increase tariffs on EU \u2060cars because the bloc was too slow to formalise \u200bthe deal from mid-2025.<\/p>\n
\u201cI want to look through the noise,\u201d \u200bLescure told reporters before a monthly meeting of eurozone finance ministers.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have a deal, and that deal is in the process of \u200bbeing negotiated. It is also democratically examined by the \u200bEuropean Parliament. We are willing to stick to this deal in \u200cgood \u2060faith, and we hope everyone else is in the same frame of mind,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Representatives of the European Parliament and the Council, the body representing EU governments, will on \u200bWednesday resume negotiations \u200bon legislation \u2060to lower EU duties on imported U.S. goods, with the EU assembly wanting to establish \u200bmultiple safeguards.<\/p>\n
Germany\u2019s Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil said \u200bthe EU \u2060did not want to escalate the dispute, and Dutch Finance Minister Eelco Heinen, asked how the EU should respond, \u2060said commenting \u200bon that now would not \u200bhelp bring the deal across the line.<\/p>\n
