The Eurovision Song Contest <\/a>will get underway in Vienna, Austria, next week, with delegates from 30 countries competing for a spot in the grand final.<\/p>\n

A total of 35 countries are taking part this year, but host country Austria and four of the \u201cBig Five\u201d countries \u2013 United Kingdom<\/a>, Italy, France and Germany \u2013 are guaranteed a spot in the final.<\/p>\n

However, their delegates will still get to perform during the semi-finals taking place on Tuesday 12 May and Thursday 14 May.<\/p>\n

Spain \u2013 the fifth country typically guaranteed a spot in the final due to its broadcaster making the largest financial contribution to the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) \u2013 withdrew from this year\u2019s contest in protest over Israel\u2019s participation<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Four other countries\u2019 broadcasters \u2013 Iceland, the Netherlands, Ireland and Slovenia \u2013 chose to pull out of Eurovision over the EBU\u2019s decision to allow Israel to compete<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The 70th Eurovision Song Contest is being held at the Wiener Stadthalle in Vienna\u2019s 15th district (Rudolfsheim-F\u00fcnfhaus).<\/p>\n
