{"id":36997,"date":"2026-05-10T09:46:36","date_gmt":"2026-05-10T09:46:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/europe\/36997\/"},"modified":"2026-05-10T09:46:36","modified_gmt":"2026-05-10T09:46:36","slug":"eu-grandee-backs-joint-debt-to-save-taxpayer-cash-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/europe\/36997\/","title":{"rendered":"EU grandee backs joint debt to save taxpayer cash \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Taking on the dollar<\/p>\n<p>Supporters claim that mounting competition between Europe, the U.S. and China warrants further issuance of EU joint debt <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/trump-chaos-pushes-investors-to-buy-record-eu-debt\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">to tackle the dollar\u2019s role<\/a> as the global reserve currency.<\/p>\n<p>With\u00a0investors spooked by U.S. president Donald Trump&#8217;s erratic decision-making,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pro.politico.eu\/news\/217741\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">funds\u00a0from Asia and the Middle East<\/a>\u00a0are increasing\u00a0their\u00a0demand for\u00a0EU\u00a0bonds, which are currently\u00a0issued for specific programs including the post-Covid recovery fund and the <a href=\"https:\/\/pro.politico.eu\/bills\/738447\/overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">SAFE<\/a> loan-for-defense\u00a0scheme.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a sign of growing confidence, buyers from the Asia-Pacific region purchased 28 percent of the Commission\u2019s three-year bonds in April \u2014 up from 13 percent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pro.politico.eu\/press\/233314\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">in the previous auction in March<\/a>, according to data from the Commission.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are in a different mood \u2026 in which the European environment is more important than just the national one,\u201d Letta said.<\/p>\n<p>However, in more critical remarks, he compared Europe to a \u201cpetrified forest,\u201d in which national stakeholders oppose changes to the status quo.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything is like it was 30 years ago. The banks are the same. The energy providers are the same. Telecom operators are the same as 30 years ago.
