{"id":38142,"date":"2026-05-11T13:10:38","date_gmt":"2026-05-11T13:10:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/europe\/38142\/"},"modified":"2026-05-11T13:10:38","modified_gmt":"2026-05-11T13:10:38","slug":"france-opposes-fast-tracking-eu-budget-deal-by-year-end-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/europe\/38142\/","title":{"rendered":"France opposes fast-tracking EU budget deal by year-end \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>EU countries are facing mounting pressure to finalize an agreement before French presidential elections in April 2027, which could hand power to the far-right National Rally.<\/p>\n<p>German Chancellor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bundesregierung.de\/breg-de\/aktuelles\/pk-kanzler-merz-pm-irland-2421330\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Friedrich Merz<\/a> and European Council President Ant\u00f3nio Costa \u2014\u00a0who will broker the final stage of the talks \u2014\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/eu-aims-france-marine-le-pen-proof-budget-deal-2026-election-far-right\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">have called on EU leaders<\/a> to secure a deal in the Council by the end of 2026.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/pro.politico.eu\/bills\/740629\/overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Commission&#8217;s proposal<\/a> envisages \u20ac1.8 trillion to spend on EU priorities including agriculture and defense from 2028 to 2034, in addition to \u20ac166 billion to repay post-Covid joint debt. The Cypriot presidency of the Council of the EU is expected to propose new spending figures in early June.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/europe\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/GettyImages-2256967535-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8413871\"  \/>Friedrich Merz and Ant\u00f3nio Costa shake hands in Brussels on January 22, 2026. | Nicolas Tucat\/AFP via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>There are lingering concerns that the National Rally\u2019s platform \u2014\u00a0which includes slashing France\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/b54d149e-3329-4fbd-97a9-7d5aebb6fbad\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">\u00a0contributions to the EU budget<\/a>\u00a0and downsizing military aid to Ukraine \u2014\u00a0could throw a spanner in the Council negotiations, should the party win next year&#8217;s elections.<\/p>\n<p>Securing a Council agreement by the end of the year would leave plenty of time for negotiations with the European Parliament. The deadline for a plenary vote is Dec. 31, 2027, as the new budget comes into force at the start of 2028.<\/p>\n<p>In a further complication, however, other major European countries \u2014\u00a0Italy, Spain and Poland \u2014\u00a0are also planning to hold national elections in 2027.
