BRUSSELS, May 11 (Reuters) – European Union \u2060foreign \u2060ministers reached an \u2060agreement on Monday on new sanctions \u200btargeting violent Israeli settlers in the occupied West \u200cBank, as well as \u200cleading Hamas figures, European Union foreign \u2060policy \u2060chief Kaja Kallas said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The sanctions package, which targets three \u200bsettlers and four settler organisations whose identities have yet to be publicly disclosed, had been blocked \u200bfor months by the previous Hungarian government which \u2060lost \u2060an election last \u2060month.<\/p>\n

European \u200bgovernments have raised concern about a rise in reports \u200bof settler violence \u2060against Palestinians in the West Bank.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“It was high time we move from deadlock to delivery,” Kallas said in a post on \u2060X. “Extremisms and violence carry consequences,” she added.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon \u2060Saar said on X the EU had “chosen, in an arbitrary and political manner, to impose sanctions on Israeli citizens and entities because of their political views and without any basis.”<\/p>\n

“Equally outrageous is the unacceptable comparison the European Union has chosen \u2060to make between Israeli citizens and Hamas terrorists. This is a completely distorted moral equivalence,” he added.<\/p>\n

There was no immediate response from \u200bHamas.<\/p>\n
